COVID 19 Viral Testing For Admission and Preop
COVID 19 Viral Testing For Admission and Preop
All symptomatic patients regardless of vaccination status should undergo COVID-19 RT PCR
All patients who are not up to date with all recommended COVID 19 vaccine doses should
undergo COVID-19 RT PCR
All asymptomatic, fully vaccinated patients may not have any COVID 19 viral testing if the
community transmission rate is low to moderate
Patients who will undergo aerosol generating procedures should have COVID 19 RT PCR
Asymptomatic
and Fully
Vaccinated
YES
Patient is likely to undergo an
aerosol generating procedure
Low to Moderate Community transmission is defined as
NO
COVID 19 symptoms
Fever or chills, Cough, Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, Fatigue, Muscle or body
aches, Headache, New loss of taste or smell, Sore throat, Congestion or runny nose, Nausea
or vomiting, Diarrhea
Aerosol Generating Procedures:
Open suctioning of airway secretions
Sputum induction
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
No viral testing needed Endotracheal intubation and extubation
Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) (e.g., BiPAP, CPAP)
Bronchoscopy
Manual ventilation
Autopsy procedures or medical/surgical procedures using oscillating bone saws
All surgical procedures that may pose higher risk for transmission if the patient has
COVID-19 infection (e.g., that generate potentially infectious aerosols or involve
anatomic regions where viral loads may be higher, such as the nose and throat,
oropharynx, respiratory tract)
