DATE SUBMIT: DATE RETURN: PW 1 ~ INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING (UTP CABLE) COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO): cLo2 Construct a simple LAN or WLAN in accordance to IEEE or TIA/EIA- 568-A/B wiring standard and network troubleshooting using network simulation or tools. (P4, PLOS) PLOS : Demonstrate awareness of the norm practice of professional bodies such as IEEE or TIA/EIA-568-A/B during practical work session. CLO3 : Apply appropriate techniques, resources and modern engineering and IT tools to well-defined engineering problems with an awareness of the limitations. (A3, PLO8) PLO8 : Understand and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of technician practice OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this practical work, students should be able to: a. Prepare a straight-through cable b. Prepare a crossover cable c. Test cable using networking cable tester 4. Terminate and install CatSe cable into Keystone jack THEORY ‘ Zz The most two common Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) network standards are the 10BASE- T Ethernet and the 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet. The cable is constructed using either TIAIEIA TS6BA or T568B standards for Ethemet which determines which color wire is used on each pin. Straight- | through cable is also commonly referred to as patch cable. Normal straight through or patch cables were used to connect from a host network interface controller (a computer or similar device) to a network switch, hub or router. b) CROSS OVER CABLE Ethernet crossover cable is a type of Ethernet cable used to connect computing devices together directly. A cable is used to connect two devices of the same type, two hosts or two switches to each other. ©) NETWORK KEYSTONE A keystone module is a standardized snap-in package for mounting a variety of low-voltage electrical jacks or optical connectors into a keystone wall face plate, surface- mount box or a patch panel. Keystone modules have a rectangular face of 14.5mm wide by 16.0mm high and are held in place with flexible tabs. This allows them to be snapped into a mounting plate with correspondingly-sized rectangular holes, called ports. All keystones, regardless of the type of jack they carry, are interchangeable and replaceable. This provides much flexibility in arranging and mounting many different types of electrical jacks in one plate or panel without requiring customized manufacturing. Some keystones use a pass-through type connector, where there is a jack on both the front face as well as the rear side. Others only have a jack on the front and employ a different mechanism for hard-wiring signal cables to the rear, such as a mini 110 block, an insulation-displacement connector or a crimp or solder connection. Use a wire stripper or a knife to strip the outer insulation of one end of the UTP cable and expose the 4 pairs of the twisted wire inside. ©. Untwist the 4 pairs wire. Arrange the 8 colors using the T-568B standard (Refer to Table 1). This is the standard use for our country. Figure 1: Straight Through UTP cable d. Straighten the 8 wires and trim their edges so that it becomes the same length. Trim them so that the edges are about 15mm from the outer insulation. Refer to Figure 2. ie Figure 2: rimming Step 2 : Inserting the wires into RJ45 a. Push the 8 wires into place inside the RJ45, Make sure the wires arrangement is correct (take note where is the RJ45 Pin 1). PW 4 = INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING (UTP CABLE) Step 3 : Crimping the RJ45 connector a. Use the crimping tool to clamp the Ru45 connector onto the cable. Clamp with just enough force so that the connector cannot be removed from the cable afterward. b. Repeat steps a for the other end of the UTP cable. Make sure to use the same color standard as the first end. Step 4: Test the cable a. Test the finish cable using a RJ45 UTP cable tester. PART B: PREPARING A CROSSOVER UTP CATSe CABLE. Step 1: Preparing a crossover cable Cut 1 of the RU45 plug from your straight cable from Activity 1A. b. Use a wire stripper or a knife to strip the outer insulation of one end of the UTP cable and expose the 4 pairs of the twisted wire inside. cc, Untwist the 4 pairs wire. Arrange the 8 wires by following the T-568A standard (Refer to Table 1). Figure 3: Crossover UTP Cable d. Straighten the 8 wires and trim their edges so that it becomes the same length. Trim them so that the edges are about 15mm from the outer insulation. Refer to Figure 2. PW 1 ~ INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING (UTP CABLE) Step 2 : Inserting the wires into RJ45 a, Push the 8 wires into place inside the RJ45, Make sure the wires arrangement is correct (take note where is the RU45 Pin 1). Step 3 : Crimping the RJ45 connector a. Use the crimping tool to clamp the RJ45 connector onto the cable. Clamp with just enough force so that the connector cannot be removed from the cable afterward, Step 4: Test the cable a. Test the cable using the cable tester. Keep this cable for use in later lab work. Category 5 wiring standards: EIAITIA 5684/5688 and AT&T 258A define the wiring standards and allow for two different wiring color codes. Use the UTP cable network you Sia prepare in PART 1. Remember which color code standard you use. Cut one Se end of the cable (cut the RJ45 plug Lo with T568-A standard). b. Strip approximately 1. ©. Separate the twisted wire pairs from each other than untwist each pair. A J Straighten wire ends out as much as \ possible. inches of jacket from the twisted-pair cable. am 7 Step 2 : Install wire into the keystone jack a. Remove the jack's protective cap. b. Once the cap has been removed, you'll notice that there is wire configurations printed near the termination siots. If you are given a choice between “A” and “B" configurations, choose whichever one you'd like, just be sure to remember which one you're using when it comes time to terminate the cable's other end with a jack! Configurations must be the same at both ends of the network cabling. PW 1 ~ INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING (UTP CABLE) Step 3: Punch down wires firmly c. Place all 8 wires into the center of the jack; from there, divert the wires into their correct slots, pressing them as far down into the S.. termination slots as they will go. Excess wire > length will be extending out of the sides of e the jack. i a. It's easiest to punch down wires if you do one side of the jack at a time, Make sure that the punch down tool's “Cut” side is aligned with the outer edge of the jack and that the jack assembly is resting on a hard, sturdy surface that is able to withstand force. To punch down each wire, press down on the punch down. tool until you hear a loud click and simultaneous, _metallic-sounding “ping”. These noises are indicators that the punch- down has been done correctly; if you don’t hear them, you'll know that the punch down hasn't been successful. b. Check the quality of the punches. Inspect each termination slot along the outer edge of the jack; each wire should be firmly anchored at the bottom of its slot and the wires’ copper conductors will be visible c. Snap the jack's cover back on, over the wires. d. Firmly insert the jack assembly into the faceplate from the back; be sure that the jack’s clip is facing up, so that it properly snaps into the faceplate port. PW 4 ~ INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING (UTP CABLE) e. Repeat step 1b to step 3d to install another cable into keystone jack at the other end of the UTP cable. Remember to use the same color standard, Step 4 : Test the cable a. Test the keystone connection with a network cable tester.
