COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO):
cLo2z : Construct a simple LAN or WLAN in accordance to IEEE or TIVEIA-
568-A/B wiring standard and network troubleshooting using network
simulation tool. (P4, PLO5)
PLOS _: Apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modem engineering and
IT tools to well-defined engineering problems, with an awareness of the
limitations. (DK8)
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion the lab session, students should be able to:
1. Understand the function of common network command tools
2. Comprehend the use of network command tools.
3. Perform basic network troubleshooting by using the network command
tools.
THEORY
Network troubleshooting tools are a necessity for every network administrator.
‘When getting started in the networking field, it is important to amass a number
of tools that can be used to troubleshoot a variety of different network
conditions.
While it is true that use of specific tools can be subjective and at the discretion
of the engineer, most operating system such as Windows already comes with
several useful network command tools. These command tools can help user
to troubleshoot most basic networking issues.
Among these network command, there several command which are
commonly used for troubleshooting network problems, They're ipconfig,
ping, netstat, tracert and nslookup.
Ipconfig command is use to display the computer basic network
configuration. With ipconfig/all a detailed configuration report for all
interfaces including configured serial ports.
‘The command ping is usually best to verify that a route exists between the
local computer and @ network host by first using the ping command and the IP
address of the network host to which you want to connect. Ping can also be
used with the target name instead of its IP address.
tracert command is use to view the route taken by a packet to reach its target,
host. If the route known, it can be used to determine where a packet
stopped on the network in case of fail network.PWS - NETWORK TROUBLESHOOTING (NETWORK COMMAND TOOLS)
Netsat displays network connections for Transmission Control Protocol (both
incoming and outgoing), routing tables, and a number of network interface
(network interface controller or software-defined network interface) and
network protocol statistics. itis used for finding problems in the network and
to determine the amount of traffic on the network as a performance
measurement.
The nslookup command is a powerful tool for diagnosing DNS problems.
You know you're experiencing a DNS problem when you can access a
resource by specifying its IP address but not its DNS name. For example, if
you can get to www.ebay.com by typing 66.135.192.87 in your browser's
address bar but not by typing www.ebay.com, you have a DNS problem.
EQUIPMENT / TOOLS
4. Computer with network interface card.
2. Network and internet access.
3. Microsoft Windows Operating System.
PROCEDURE

EXERCISES
Using the network command tools perform these 2 tasks,
1. Find the IP address of the Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia webpage. Use
the command and print out the output screen.
2. Ifyou know the IP address of a host (computer), which command will help you
to obtain the computer name with corresponding IP address, Use that
command and printout the output and circle the computer name,PWS - NETWORK TROUBLESHOOTING (NETWORK COMMAND TOOLS)
