Units, Dimensions and Measurements Question 1 Detailed Solution

Concept:

Measurement of any physical quantity involves comparison with a certain basic, arbitrarily
chosen, internationally accepted reference standard called unit and Dimension is a
mathematical tool used for studying the nature of physical quantities.
The basic concept of dimensions is that we can add or subtract only those quantities which
have the same dimensions.
And the dimensional formula is defined as the expression of the physical quantity in terms of
mass, length, and time.
Energy of electromagnetic waves is given by dimension analysis and it is represented by
formula E = hv

Explanation:

We know that the energy of an emitted photon is given as E = hν

Where E is the energy of photon and h is plank’s constant and ν if the frequency of an emitted
photon

∴ h = E/ν

Hence the dimension of Plank’s constant is given as,

2 −2
[M L T ]
E 2 −1
h = = −1
= [M L T ]
ν [T ]

⇒ Dimension of h = [ML2T-1]

Units, Dimensions and Measurements Question 3 Detailed Solution

CONCEPT:

Least Count: The smallest value that an instrument can measure accurately is called least
count.
All the readings or measured values are accurate only up to this value.

EXPLANATION:

The smallest value that an instrument can measure accurately is called least count.
This is the least value that can be measured by the instrument.
The least count error is the error associated with the resolution of the instrument.
The least count of a vernier caliper is 0.01 cm.
The least count of a spherometer is 0.001 cm.

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 2 : Parallax method

Units, Dimensions and Measurements Question 4 Detailed Solution

The correct answer is option 2) i.e. Parallax method

CONCEPT:

Parallax method: This method is used to determine large distances such as the distance of a

planet or a star from the earth.
Parallax is the approximate shift in the position of an object with respect to another
when we shift the point observation sideways.
The distance between two points of observation is called basis (b).
The distance of the object from the two viewpoints is D.
The angle between the two directions along which the object is viewed is the parallax
angle or parallactic angle (θ).

If S is the position of the object and A B are the two points of observation,
b
θ =
D

EXPLANATION:

The triangulation method measures the angles in a triangle formed by three

observation points. Using trigonometry and the measured length of just one side, the
other distances in the triangle are calculated. This is used for geographical measurements
and not astronomical distances.
The echo method makes use of the principle of reflection of sound or light. Knowing the
speed of the wave and the time of reflection back to the source, the distance between the two
points is calculated. This is not a very accurate method and hence cannot be relied upon over
astronomical distances.
The parallax method is used to determine the distance of a planet or a star from the earth.

The correct answer is option 1) i.e. joule (J)

CONCEPT:

Work function: It is the minimum amount of energy required to cause photo-emission of

electrons from a metal surface when light is incident on it.
The work function is also known as the threshold energy.
The energy of the incident light is equal to the sum of the work function and the
photoelectron kinetic energy.

Therefore, the total energy of photon = work function + maximum kinetic energy of the
electron.

The energy of a photon is given by the equation:

 E = h ν

Where ν is the frequency of incident light and h is the Planck's constant.

EXPLANATION:

The work function is a measure of energy. All forms of energy have the same SI unit i.e. joule
(J).

Units, Dimensions and Measurements Question 11 Detailed Solution Download Solution PDF

CONCEPT:

A physical quantity is a property of a material. It can be expressed in number by measurement.

A physical quantity is expressed by a numerical value and a unit. For example, the physical
quantity length can be expressed as 4 meters, where 4 is the numerical value and meter is the
unit.
The SI units are the standard units of measurement defined by the International System of
Units (SI).

EXPLANATION:

Following are the SI units of the physical quantity:

Physical Quantity SI Units

Power watt
Inductance henry
Capacitance farad
Force newton
Mass kilogram
Resistance ohm
Energy, work joule

The kilogram represents the unit of a physical quantity and not the physical quantity. Therefore
option 4 is correct.

IMP POINT

The name and symbol of SI units are written in lowercase.

Except for the symbols of those SI units, named after a person, which are written with an initial
capital letter.
For example, the second has the symbol s, but the kelvin has the symbol K because it is
named after Lord Kelvin.

CONCEPT:

Significant Figures: Significant figures in the measured value of a physical quantity tell the
number of digits in which we have confidence.
The larger the number of significant figures obtained in a measurement, the greater is the
accuracy of the measurement and vice-versa.

Significant figures do not change if we measure a physical quantity in different units.

Significant figures retained after the mathematical operation (like addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division) should be equal to the minimum significant figures involved in any
physical quantity in the given operation.
Significant figures are the number of digits up to which we are sure about their accuracy.

EXPLANATION:

Trailing zeros or the zeros placed to the right of the number is significant.
Therefore, 433.00 has five significant figures. So option 4 is correct.

Units, Dimensions and Measurements Question 14 Detailed Solution Download Solution PDF

Concept:

When a force is applied on an object which causes displacement along the direction of force then
the work is said to be done by that force.

The work done by a force is defined as: The product of the component of the applied force on the
block in the direction of the displacement and the magnitude of this displacement is called work
done.

i.e., W → →
= F . dx = F dx cos θ

Here both force and displacement will be along the same direction, since force is cause this
displacement thus Work done is a scalar quantity.

And SI unit of Work is Joule whereas CGS unit is erg

Whereas, 1 joule = 107 erg

Explanation:

From the above explanation we can see that both Joule and Erg are units of Works.
