26" and 27 Sundays in Ordit St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church ry Time | September 26 - October 3, 2071 LD qy 5313 Flad Avenue, Madison, WI 53711 608-271-7421 | parish@stmariagoretti.org | www.stmariagoretti.org A Message from the 26" Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Family of Faith, Jesus isso generous, why dowe so often fail to experience his generosity? If God's goodness i like the sun, shining brightly and constantly ll around us, why do we so often find ourselves in darkness, sadness, and difficulty? The full answer to this question comes only with a lifetime of knowing, loving, and following Christ, as the saints can attest to. Butat least part of the answer is readily available. Many times we don't see God's light shining in our lives, because we don't bother opening up the shutters. Itcan be a bright, brilliant day outside, but ifwe close ourselves up in our room behind locked shutters and drawn curtains, we won't benefit from the light. God is respectful of our freedom. He wants our friendship, not servile obedience, And so he gives us opportunities and. instruments to receive his generous grace, but he doesn't force us to use ee Cur gatas) omen) Pe neta them, He gives us the Sacred Scripture, a heavenly storehouse of wisdom and inspiration, but it's up to usto study it, read it, and discover its treasures. He gives us the gift of prayer. He is always ‘online," ready to listen to us and speak in the quiet of our hearts, but it's up to tus to make prayer a priority, to develop a life of prayer, to pray ona daily basis and improve our methods of prayer, so that we become better and better at hearing his voice. He gives us the sacraments of the Eucharist and confession, each one of which isa a oes second Py a 26™ SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME flowing fountain of grace and spiritual strength, butitis up to us to come frequently and drink deeply from these fountains. God is generous. Itis his nature to spread goodness. Let’s ask God for the grace and courage this week to open up all the shutters of our soul, or atleast one shutter that we haveso far been afraid to open. Nothing would please him more. God bless, Fr. Scott Cee tones .m.in frontofthe ch Saint of the Week: St. Vincent de Paul ‘Most people have heard of St. Vincent de Paul, but not too many know very much ‘about him or his life. Here are five things ‘that you may not Know: ‘5. St. Vincent de Paul spent the frst 20 ‘years of his life seeking fame and ‘wealth, Vincent de Paul was born to a peasant family in France in 1580. Although he later achieved fame for his dedication to the poor, his early life was spent attempting to escape his ‘humble roots. Vincent became a priest at the young age of 19, and he spent most ofhis carly priesthood mingling with members of the elite 4. St. Vincent dle Paul was captured by pirates. In 1605, Vincent was returning ‘home by boat froma trip. While travelling, he was caprured by pirates, ‘who brought him to Tunis in Northern Affica, He was sold into slavery and he remained a slave for two years. During this time, he prayed to God, telling that ifhis life would be spared and he ‘was freed, he would devote the rest of his Life to the service of the poor. 43.St. Vincent de Paul was a ‘community organizer. Aficr his ‘eventual escape from Africa, Vincent served a church in rural France. The poverty he found there shocked him—it ‘was not uncommon for people who were ‘unable to find work in his poor ‘community to die from starvation. He ‘met with affluent friends and inspired them to organize into groups going from ‘house to house requesting furniture, food ‘and clothing. 2. St. Vincent de Paul was a legend in hhis own time. He then expanded his swork, founding hospitals, orphanages ‘and homes for people who were mentally ilL. He also devoted his last years to serving prisoners and slaves, sharing ‘with them his story of hope as a former slave himself. He was very well known ‘throughout Europe in his own time. 4. St. Vincent de Paul did NOT found ‘the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was not founded until more than 150 years after St. Vincent's death, source: svincentdayton org St. Maria Goretti Catholic Churen Spiritual Life “Bless the Lord, all you his au mighty in power, fulfilling his word, and heeding his voice.” (Psalm 103:20) This is the Entrance ‘Antiphon at Mass on this coming Wednesday, September 29, the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. This verse gives insight to the functions of God’s angels. Their very first role is praising and worshipping God. In various psalms wwe see this role acclaimed, and the psalmist declares his praising God in the presence of the angels. In the book of Revelation, we read of the angels singing before the throne of God. (For example, see Rev. 15:2-3.) Luke 2:13-14 tells of the many angels singing and praising God as they appeared to the shepherds at the time of the birth of Christ. The Chureh’s liturgy also gives credence to this most esteemed role of the angels. We hear this in every Mass with the concluding words of each Preface, namely that we join with all the saints and angels as we sing the Holy, Holy, Holy. Another role of the angels, according to the antiphon above, is that of fulfilling God's word and heeding his voice. Through salvation history, God has sent the archangels to earth to do his bidding. Saints Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael, the three archangels, were given special ainistries wich We know from the accounts in the Bible. Archangel Gabriel was sent to Zechariah whose wife Elizabeth was barren to announce the birth of John the Baptist (LK 1:5-20). Gabriel was also sent to Mary to announce the birth of Jesus (Lk 1:26). Archangel Raphael was sent to aid Tobit and Sarah who both knew distress and sorrow and were praying that it would be better to face death than what they were experiencing Raphael brings a cure for the blindness of Tobit, and he also intercedes for Sarah in alleviating her marital distress. (If you haven’t read the Book of Tobit in the Old Testament, please do so as it contains Page? ‘many values about life.) Archangel Michael battles in heaven against Satan and Satan’s angels. Michael and his angels are victorious and throw the evil angels from heaven. (See Revelation, chapter 12.) Every day the battle against evil confronts us, and we pray to St. Michael the Archangel to defend us in this battle, See the prayer to St Michael later in this bulletin. Angels are commonly known as God’s messengers. In heeding God's voice, they carry God’s message to those designated by God, including us, Gods angels also function as our guardian angels. God gives each of us a personal guardian angel to watch over ts, to lead and guide us throughout the day, to be our protection. On October 2, the Church celebrates the liturgy in memorial of all Guardian Angels. The Entrance ‘Antiphon of the Mass is again that of acknowledging the angels praising God: “Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord, praise and exalt him above all forever.” (Daniel 3:58) At the end of this bulletin is the traditional Angel of God prayer. Throughout this week, let us be more cognizant of the role of angels in the life of the Church and in our own personal lives. Daily let us pray to St. Michael to defend the Church and us from evil. Letus call on our guardian angels to be our protector and guide. Daily let us join all the angels singing and praising God-the very first cole of all those whom God has created.
