Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Mosquitoes are really dangerous for everybody. It may cause dengue, a

mosquito-borne viral infection that is desperate for humans. A statistical study

conducted by DOH (Department of Health), on 2017 there were 27,023 cases of

dengue was reported, and it was lowered on 2018 in which there were 20,108

dengue cases were reported nationwide from January to March. On 2019 it was

increased for about 146,062 dengue cases for the first seven months of 2019.

There were 622 people who have died due to dengue out of this 146,062 dengue

cases. People may be weak for some days of having this kind of sick and will

experience a repeating fever. It is better that the sick should be cured as early as

possible so that it will not lead to the point that the person who is suffering it will

no longer be alive. Thus, the study comes up with a mosquito repellent out of

neem tree to reduce this problem.

According to Petruzello (2018) neem is a medicinal plant and is known for the

source of organic pesticides. Neem is like native to Indian subcontinent and to

dry areas throughout Asia. The plant has long been used in Ayurvedic, a healthy

lifestyle system, and folk medicine that is used in organic farming applications.

The neem tree as said earlier, medicinal plant, helps prevent the population of

insects that is spread in all over the world. People do not want to be affected by

insects that has disadvantages and is also bad for our health. Insects bring

illnesses and other bad effects in our body. Neem is usually grown from seed but
3

can be propagated from cuttings or root suckers. The plant is hardly and resilient.

It grows well in poor, rocky soils. Neem tolerates a wide variety of environmental

conditions but cannot survive freezing temperatures or being saturated. All parts

of neem tree are useful, and many of its medicinal uses are based on its

antibacterial and antifungal properties. Oil extracted from the seeds can be used

directly as an insect repellent, insecticide, and fungicide. The primary active

insecticides ingredient, azadirachtin, works to disrupt the hormones involved with

insect moulting, to prevent larvae from developing into adults. In this case, we

can also prevent the diseases that we can get from insects mostly to mosquitoes

that zip our blood. Neem oil can kill soft-bodied insects on contact and decreases

mating and reproductive behaviours.

While in the study of Ahmed and Grainge (1986) neem tree contains

promising pest-control substances that is really effective against many

economically important pests. Neem is usually used by farmers to kill and repel

insecticides and is very effective when it is used. Thereby, offering potential for

crop protection and off-farm income decaying and will have less dead plants. In

this case, it will also help the farmers to have less mosquitoes and other insects

to affect the health of the people and in the community. It protects people to not

be unhealthy and avoid having so much illnesses and infections to human body.

The help of this mosquito repellent is important to because it will have less of

people that are suffering dengue. The tree’s numerous pharmacological and

other complementary uses make it doubly attractive for incorporation in large-

scale rural development efforts.

4

With the help of the said mosquito repellent, illnesses will be prevented and

people would likely enjoy a safe and effective way of killing mosquito knowing

that using neem tree as mosquito repellent is really helpful for thedaily activities

of humans because diseases are slowly decreasing. People can finally enjoy a

happy and better life with the use of the experimental mosquito killer.

Chapter IV
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This selective section presents the summary of the principal findings,

conclusion and recommendations of the study.

Summary

The table 1 shows the effectiveness of Neem (Azadiractha indica) as

Mosquito Repellent, table 2 shows the effectiveness of Commercial Mosquito

Repellent, while table 3 shows the comparison of the effectiveness between

Neem and the Commercial Mosquito Repellent.

According to the results, for table 1, using 3 sprays of Neem Tree Leaves,

there were a total of 8 mosquitoes repelled. Using5 sprays of Neem Tree Leaves,

there were a total of 7 mosquitoes repelled. Using 10 sprays of Neem Tree

Leaves, there were a total of 9 mosquitoes repelled. For table 2, using 3 sprays,

5 sprays, and 10 sprays of Commercial Mosquito Repellent, there were a total of

15

6 mosquitoes repelled consistently using 3 sprays, 5 sprays and 10 sprays of

Commercial Mosquito Repellent. For table 3, it shows the comparison of the

effectivity between Neem Tee Leaves and Commercial Mosquito Repellent.

There were a total of 24 mosquitoes repelled using Neem Tree Leaves while a

total of 18 mosquitoes repelled using Commercial Mosquito Repellent wherein it

shows the gap of effectiveness between Neem Tree Leaves and Commercial

Mosquito Repellent. Neem (Azadirachta indica) as a Mosquito Repellent,

repels most number of Mosquitoes in an estimated time of 10 minutes and a

minimum of five sprays.

Conclusion

On the bases of the summary of findings, the following conclusions was

drawn.

The researchers concluded that the higher number of sprays will repel

most number of mosquitoes. Neem (Azadirachta indica) Tree Leaves as

Mosquito Repellent has a total of 24 mosquitoes repelled while Commercial

Mosquito Repellent has a total of 18 mosquitoes repelled in which it shows that

Neem (Azadirachta indica) Tree Leaves is more effective than the Commercial

one, also, because Neem Tree Leaves has no chemicals that affect humans

such as, Propuxur, that can cause vomiting and headache, and Cyfluthrin, that

can cause lung problems, convulsions, asthmatic attacks and [Link] is concluded

that the Azadirachta indica as Mosquito Repellent is generally accepted in terms

of repellent duration and safety.

16

Recommendation

From conducting the study to observing how mosquitoes repelled, was a

hard thing. The researchers highly recommended that when making the product,

Neem (Azadirachta indica)as a Mosquito repellent, it should have a good

estimation of the ingredients needed, such as, the amount of oil to mix and the

volume of leaves to blend.
