INTRODUCTION

 Itaipu dam is a hydroelectric dam

and largest hydroelectric power
generator in the world.
 The construction started in the
 year jan-1975 and completed and
began generating electricity in
 may-1984.
 Total cost of the project is 13.5
billion pounds (19.6billion dollars).

  ma zing facts

 The dam is 18 times larger and 6

times heavier than hoover dam and
produces 6 times that of hoover
dam.
 Annual power production in 2013
 was 98.64twh, largest ever
electricity produced by a single
dam.
 One of seven wonders of modern
 world

location
 Thedam is build across Parana
river located on the border
between Brazil and Paraguay.

Need of the project

 Main reason behind was for
generation of hydroelectricity.
 To solve a diplomatic impasse
involving Brazil and Paraguay.
 For the economic growth of the
countries.
 To reduce emission of co2.
 Use of renewable source of energy.

Contract details
 Client: itaipu Binacional.

 Contractors: ELC Electro consult

(Italy), IECO (us).

 Thekey consultant engineer for the

project was an Italian engineer
 named Piero Sembenalli.

Technical details
Dam and spillway
 Height: 196 m (643 ft.).
 Length: 7,919 m (25,981 ft.).
 Volume: 12.3 million m³ (430 million
cu ft).
 Spillway capacity: 62,200 m³/s
(2,196,572 cu Ft./s).

Reservoir
 Capacity: 29,000 million m³
 Catchment area: 1.35 million km².
 Surface area: 1,350 km² .
 Reservoir length: 170 km

Construction details
 Before construction the Paraná
river was diverted and coffer dam
 was constructed to divert water.
  the dam is constituted by 4 sub dams
a) earth dam B) rock dam
C) Main dam D) wing dam
 Portland pozzolonic cement were
used and fe500 grade steel was used
for construction.
 Refrigerants were used for reduction

of heat of hydration.

Power generation
 18 generating units were installed
using slip form technique.
 Francis turbine measuring 16m and
 weighing 800tons capacity of
generating 715mw of power.
 2 more were installed in 2006-07 for
generating larger power.
 It was able to serve 75% of total
power consumed by Paraguay and
25% of brazil.

Risks and challenges during

the project
 Negotiation of land acquisition.
 Diversion of river Paraná.
 Recruitment of skilled workers.
 Project was delayed for few
 months to investigate the crumbling
rock.
 140tons of concrete was needed for
every 20 minutes.
 Social and environmental impacts.

conclusion
 It serves as a major source of power
for Paraguay.
 It avoids 67.5 million tons of co2
emission.
 As a project manager I would like to
emphasise on 5 important function.
1) feasibility study 2) planning
3) organizing 4) implementation
5) monitoring and control.
