SYNOPSIS OF THE NOVEL

1.1 SYNOPSIS

The story is about the life of Uncle Tom who works for a family.An African middle-
aged man being a “slave”in his master house,Mr.Shelby.Uncle Tom is a very kind
person.He has a strong power,very helpful,and reliable.He lives in the small cabin which
desinged and built by his master that was made from wood logs.In the master’s
dwelling,there is an African woman who works for Mr.Shelby called Aunt Chloe.She lives
on there as a head chef for Mr.Shelby family.She always makes a well-cooked dishes
everyday for the family.Aunt Chloe has a couple children with woolly-headed, and shining
black skin.The children’s name are Mose and Pete.Uncle Tom and Aunt Chloe work under
the supervision of a young master from Shelby’s Family,George Shelby.George is such a
smart boy who has a good leadership,authoritative,and also has a bright personality.

The activity of Uncle Tom and Aunt chloe everyday is to serve a Shelby
family.Uncle Tom works in the master’s dwelling as a helper for maintaining the house
such are cleaning the house,doing the house renovation,and helping the work of
Mr.Shelby.Meanwhile,Aunt Chloe takes a great responsibility and gets a total control in
the kitchen.Cooking is the main work for Aunt Chloe.She really likes to cook.For Aunt
Chloe,cooking is a centre of her soul.Beside Cooking,Aunt Chloe also babysitting her two
precious sons,Mose and Pete.A children who were cheerful,witty and noisy.

One day,Uncle tom and the other civilians were praying in the Chruch
together.Uncle Tom was a religious person.That is why,so many people were liked him
and looked up him with great amount of respect.On the otherhand,Mr.Shelby was trying to
“sell” Uncle Tom who Mr.Shelby considered as “righthand man” to someone.At
first,Mr.Shelby did not want to sell his slave.But,he said the environment forced him to do
so.

2.3 Characterizations:

▪ Uncle Tom=Uncle Tom has a ver kind personality,warm,helpful,reliable,religious man,and

respected by the surroundings community especially among the slaves.
▪ Aunt Chloe=Aunt Chloe is such a hardworker,job oriented person,really loves to
cooking,and a lovely mother.
▪ George Shelby=Smart,such a happy child,a dignified boy,and well-tought boy.
▪ Mr.Shelby=A rich guy,money oriented,and greedy
▪ Mose and Pete=Woolly headed boys,shining black eyes with fat
cheecks,cheerful,witty,and nosy children
▪ The trader=Uphold the principles of humanity

The flow of the story goes forward(progression)

Exposition=The introduction of some characters in the story like Uncle Tom,Aunt
Chloe,and Mr.Shelby
Rising Action=Showing the activity of the slavery like Uncle Tom and Aunt Chloe
Climax=When Uncle Tom leads the worshipment in the church and got sold by his
master,Mr.Shelby
Resolution=The Trading was made which means,Uncle tom officially belong to the new
master

o Place=Story set in the cabin of Uncle Tom and his master dwelling
o Date and Time=The story was set at America in the medieval

2.7 Conflict

The conflict of the story is about slavery.Unce Tom is slave that obtained by the Shelby
family.He is such a good and religious person and he is also so loyal to the
family.But,Mr.Shelby as his master,decided to sell him to another person.Because,Mr.Shelby
was obliged to do that due to the circumstances.
 CHAPTER III

CONCLUSION

Novel Uncle Toms’s Cabin is a legendary novel that was published from a long time
ago.The novel itself serves an intersting and different story.The story of the novel is about the
slavery and the life of slaves that happened at that time.Uncle Tom as a main charcter of the
story shows a great representative of a person.He is such a really good person with great
personality and religious despite the fact that he is only a slave.Eventually,he was sold by his
master to the new master due to the financial issues.

At medieval time,slavery was a huge issues that happened in the period of time.This novel
portrays a little piece of the life story among the slaves.Uncle Tom is the character who made
for a representative of slave life.The slaves usually can be trade by the contract among the
trader and the slave master.The slave did not have a much choice.They forced to work so hard
and become loyal to the family that owned them.They did not have a freedom because,they
considered as a group of people that have lower level than anybody else.In America,The
African descendants people used to be a slave for white people who ruled them.There are so
many good people among the slaves with great personality just as Uncle Tom in book “Uncle
Tom’s Cabin”. But unfortunately,the fate of Uncle Tom was horrible because,he is still a slave.

APPENDIX A

Novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin is the anti slavery novel that was published in 1852.The novel
itself was divided into two volumes and created by American author Harriet Beecher
Stowe.The purpose of the novel is to reducing the amount of slavery and racism behavior
toward African-American people in U.S.The novel was one of the best selling book in the 19th
century.The book was inspired to popularized the bad stereotypes to black people in America
in order to expose the world for knowing that America is a racist country and also became the
shape of protest the author toward the Country.
