The history of ELT in Kalimantan, an island in Indonesia, is closely tied to the

development of education and language policy in Indonesia as a whole.

In the early 20th century, during the Dutch colonial period, English was taught as a
foreign language in some schools in Kalimantan. However, the primary focus of
education at the time was on Dutch language and culture.

After Indonesia gained independence in 1945, the national language, Bahasa

Indonesia, became the focus of education policy. English remained an important
foreign language, but its teaching was often limited to urban areas and elite schools.

In the 1980s and 1990s, there was a growing awareness of the importance of English
for international communication and economic development. The Indonesian
government began to promote the teaching of English as a foreign language more
widely, and many schools in Kalimantan began to offer English classes.

Today, English language education is an important part of the education system in

Kalimantan and Indonesia as a whole. The government has implemented policies to
improve English language proficiency among students and teachers, and there are
many private language schools and courses available for those who want to improve
their English skills. Additionally, there are international schools in Kalimantan that
offer English-language education using international curricula.
