DESCRIPTION OF

NUTRITION SERVICES
–Nutrition services provide patients with education and counseling

on their diet. Nutrition services may focus on overall health and well-

being or maybe a part of treatment for specific diseases. Nutrition

Services work with patients, healthcare staff, and the general public

to promote optimum nutrition. Through complementary

interventions such as healthy school meals and food and nutrition

education, pupils can improve their diets, develop healthier food

practices and extend these to their families and communities. It is

providing nutrition counseling in health and disease; developing,

implementing, and managing nutrition care systems; and.

evaluating, making changes in, and maintaining appropriate

standards of quality in food and nutrition care services.

HOW NUTRITION SERVICES ARE INTERRELATED

TO PROMOTE STUDENTS’ OPTIMUM

DEVELOPMENT?
Research suggets that •nutritional deficiencies early in life can affect the

cognitive development of school-aged children, and access to nutrition improves

students' cognition, concentration, and energy levels.

Here are some of the importance of nutrition services in the coordinated school
health program in the Philippines:

Improved Academic Performance: Good nutrition is essential for proper brain

development and cognitive function. When students are well-nourished, they are

better able to concentrate, focus, and learn in school. This leads to improved

academic performance and better educational outcomes.

SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAM IN THE PHILIPPINES

Reduced Absenteeism and Dropout Rates: Poor nutrition can lead to illness and

reduced immunity, which can result in increased absenteeism from school. By

providing nutrition services, schools can reduce absenteeism rates and improve the

health of their students, thereby reducing dropout rates.

Enhanced Physical Growth and Development: Proper nutrition is critical for physical

growth and development, particularly during childhood and adolescence. Nutritional

deficiencies can lead to stunted growth and delayed development. By providing

nutrition services, schools can help ensure that students reach their full physical

potential.

Prevention of Malnutrition and Related Diseases: Malnutrition is a significant problem in

the Philippines, and it can lead to a range of health problems, including anemia, vitamin

deficiencies, and other illnesses. Nutrition services in schools can help prevent

malnutrition by providing students with healthy meals, nutrition education, and other

interventions.
Health Promotion and Disease Prevention: Nutrition services in schools can promote

healthy eating habits and behaviors among students, which can help prevent obesity,

diabetes, and other chronic diseases later in life. By promoting healthy eating habits

and lifestyles, schools can help students establish lifelong habits that promote good

health.
THE IMPORTANCE OF NUTRITION

SERVICES TO STUDENTS' OPTIMUM

DEVELOPMENT
A healthy school nutrition environment provides students with nutritious and appealing

foods and beverages, consistent and accurate messages about good nutrition, and ways

to learn about and practice healthy eating throughout the time children spend on school

grounds— including before- and after-school. A healthy diet throughout life promotes

healthy pregnancy outcomes, supports normal growth, development, and aging, helps

to maintain healthy body weight, and reduces the risk of chronic disease leading to

overall health and well-being.

Nutrition services are a critical component of CSHP, as they play a crucial role in ensuring

that students are able to achieve their optimum development.

to ensure that students are consuming a healthy and balanced diet. This includes

providing nutritious meals and snacks in school, as well as promoting healthy eating

habits among students. In the Philippines, the Department of Education has

implemented the National School Feeding Program (NSFP), which aims to provide

nutritious meals to public school students. The NSFP provides meals that meet the

Recommended Energy and Nutrient Intakes (RENI) for children, which helps ensure

that students are receiving the necessary nutrients for their growth and development
THE IMPORTANCE OF NUTRITION

SERVICES TO STUDENTS' OPTIMUM

DEVELOPMENT
In addition to providing nutritious meals, CSHP also promotes nutrition

education among students. This includes teaching students about the

importance of healthy eating habits, as well as providing them with the

knowledge and skills necessary to make healthy food choices. Nutrition

education can also help students develop lifelong healthy eating habits,

which can lead to better health outcomes in the long term.

Monitoring and assessing students' nutrition status. This includes

conducting regular health screenings, such as height and weight

measurements and assessments of body mass index (BMI), to identify

students who may be at risk for malnutrition or other health problems

related to poor nutrition. Early identification of nutrition-related issues

can help ensure that students receive appropriate interventions and

support to address these issues.

HOW WILL NUTRITION SERVICES HELP

TO IMPROVE STUDENTS'

DEVELOPMENT?
Nutrition services play a crucial role in improving students' development in the

Philippines by ensuring that they have access to nutritious food and education on

healthy eating habits. Here are some ways that nutrition services help improve

students' development:
Improved physical health: Good nutrition is essential for physical growth
and development. By providing nutritious meals and snacks, nutrition
services help ensure that students have the necessary nutrients to grow
and develop properly. This can lead to improved physical health,
including stronger bones, healthier skin, and better overall immunity.

Better academic performance: Proper nutrition has been linked to

better academic performance. Students who are well-nourished have
better cognitive function and are better able to focus and concentrate
in school. Nutrition services can also help reduce absenteeism due to
illness, which can negatively impact academic performance.
