Fundamentals of Games and Sports
Physical Education
• Instruction in the development and care of the body
ranging from simple calisthenic exercises to a course of
study providing training in hygiene, gymnastics, and the
performance and management of athletic games.
(Merriam Webster Dictionary)
• Focuses on the well-being of the students themselves,
of other people, and of society through learning in
health-related and movement contexts.
Importance of Physical Education
• Develops students’ competence and confidence to take part in a
range of physical activities that become a central part of their
lives, both in and out of school. A high quality PE curriculum
enables all students to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of
physical activity.
• Physical education programs are needed to increase the physical
competence, health-related fitness, self responsibility and
enjoyment of physical activity for all students so that they can be
physically active for a lifetime.

Three Functions of Physical
Education
• SKILLS DEVELOPMENT – Goal is to attain skills such as
strength, sports IQ, speed, power, endurance, and
overall fitness.
• SPORTSMANSHIP – Camaraderie and teamwork are
developed and strengthened through physical activities.
• GOOD HEALTH

• Fundamental movement skills are basic movements such as
throwing, kicking, running, jumping, hopping and
catching.
• By mastering fundamental movement skills, students will
find it easier to learn fundamental sport skills. The
combination of these two types of skills forms the basis of
physical literacy and opens the door to new sports and
physical activities and helps build a better, more confident
athlete and person.
