Why do people do sport?
SOCIALIZATION
• Is the process of learning to live in and understand a
culture or subcultures by utilizing its values, beliefs
attitudes and norms.

• It is also a process of learning the ways of one’s


society and becoming a functioning member of it
along with exhibting standards of behaviors in
accordance with its rules, laws and customs, which
have been formed due to our interaction in the
society.
• Socialization is the process by which people
become familiar with and adapt themselves to
the interpersonal relationships of their social
world.

• People develop ideas about themselves and


about those with whom they interact.

• It is a two way process that affects everyone to a


greater or lesser degree.
Sports Sociology
• Is an area of sociology that focuses on sports as a
social phenomenon.

• All social and cultural structures, patterns and


organizations are actively engaged in games and
sports festivals.

• Physical Education is perceived as an institution


were children can develop according to their
unique needs and capabillities.
• In most premodern societies, boys were encouraged
by their families to compete in sports, which were
presumed to prepare them for their adult roles as
warriors and workers.

• While girls were encouraged to continue to play


noncompetitive games that prepared them for
motherhood.

• The value of socialization through sports has long


been recognized, which is one reason for state
support of physical education in the schools and adult-
organized childrens’ sports programs.
ELEMENTS OF SOCIALIZATION THROUGH
SPORTS
• STATUS
-important element in the socialization process
because it is associated with self image and self
esteem.

• SELF-IMAGE
-body-image is an important concept as well as
psychological one, the attitude and appreciation one
has towards one’s owns body affect behaviour and
personality.
• CO-OPERATION AND COMPETITION
-are two social processes that are highly related
to the area of games and sports, it motivates the
learners in both intellectual pursuits and motor
performance

• SPORTS AND PERSONALITY


-Personality is influenced by the activity that a
person chooses to participate, it is the best way
of helping the child to identify his self-image and
formulated his ideal self.
ROLE OF PHYSICAL
EDUCATION
• It is an integral part of the total education of
every child.
• Quality programs are needed to siocialize the
youth into the total education process
• Increase the physical competence, health-related
fitness, self responsibility and enjoyment of
physical activity.
• Physically active for a lifetime
• IMPROVE PHYSICAL FITNESS
-Improves muscular strength, flexibility, muscular
endurance, body composition and cardiovascular
endurance

• SKILL DEVELOPMENT
-Develops motor skills, which allow for safe,
successful and satisfying participation in physical
activities.

-Can help major force in helping a child socialize with
others successfully and provides opportunities to
learn positive people skills.
IMPORTANCE OF SOCIALIZATION
• Process of learning to participate in a group
• Begins at birth, continues through life
• Successful socialization enables people to fit into all
kinds of social groups
• Most important learning occurs early in life without
prolonged and intensive social contact, children don’t
learn basics like walking, talking and loving.
• Human infant without socialization can’t develop the set
of attitudes, beliefs, values and behaviors associated
with being an individual

• Consistency
• Being consistent means that whether a student is showing up to practice or
coming into the biggest game of the season in its final minutes, they will be
able to deliver the same level of results.
•  Impact
• This impact is about influencing the contest in a positive fashion, and it can
vary in what it looks like.
• Discipline
• Recognising their emotions allows them to make decisions based on what
is best for the team, rather than for how they feel in that moment.
Similarities Between Games and Sports   

• Both games and sports have a set of rules, which ensure


fair competition.

• They may involve teams or individual competitors.   


  
• People play games and sports for recreation and
amusement, but they also gain various skills and
knowledge through games and sports.
Difference Between Games and Sports        

• A game is an activity typically involving skill, knowledge,


or luck, in which you follow set of rules and try to win
against an opponent.

• Sports, on the other hand, refer to an activity involving


physical exertion and skill in which an individual or a
team competes against others.
Part of a Team
• Sports participation helps create a social identity

• High school youth participating in organized sports


activities viewed sports as providing a place to meet
other young people who had at least one shared interest (
Ann Rosewater, 2009 Team-Up for the Youth).

• Quality sports program can help to develop and maintain


healthy relationships amongst youth.
Boys and Girls
• Sports participation socializes boys into
traditional gender roles, while similar
participation socializes girls into non-traditional
social benefit for female student athlethes.

• Find a sports to be way to break gender


stereotypes, enhancing their sense of possibility.
Kids and Adults
• Youth sports can also help children learn to interact with
adults such as parents and their tecahers.

• Quality sports programs that can benefit interactions


between children may also benefit exchanges between
youth and adults (Wheelock/BSYI)

• Parents promote children’s social development and social


skills by enrolling them in programs (Rosewater).
Warning Signs
• Athletes might participate in unhealthy social activities
• Skipping school, cutting classes,
• having someone from home called to the school for
disciplinary purposes and being sent to the principal’s
office.
• Abuse of alcohol by adolescent who participate in
competitive sports is a social phenomenon.
• Some studies shows that teens participating in sports
event lower use of alcohol than those who are not
involved in sports activities.
