US recognizes McMahon Line as international border

• The United States has recognized the McMahon Line as the


international boundary between Arunachal Pradesh and China in a
recently passed bipartisan resolution, calling it an "integral part of
India".
• The resolution also condemned the construction of villages in disputed
areas, the publication of maps of cities in Arunachal Pradesh, and the
expansion of Beijing's territorial claims on Bhutan.
• The resolution, titled 'Reaffirmation of Arunachal Pradesh as Indian
territory and condemnation of China's provocative activities in South
Asia', came after a major clash between the Indian and Chinese forces
in Arunachal's Tawang in December last year.

What is the McMahon Line?
• India and China share a 3,500 km long border which is disputed.
• The line that delineates the boundary between the two countries is
called the McMahon Line.
• The border of India and China can be divided into three parts. Western
Zone, Central Zone and Eastern Zone.
• The line separating India and China is the McMahon Line although
China considers the McMahon Line illegal.
• The McMahon Line was drawn during the Simla Convention of 1914,
officially described as a convention between Great Britain, China and
Tibet.

Green national highway corridor project to be implemented in
four states
• India and the World Bank have signed a loan agreement for the
construction of the Green National Highway Corridors Project
(GNHCP) in four States.

• These four states are Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and
Andhra Pradesh.
• Agreement has been signed for construction of 781 kilometer green
national highway corridor in these states with a line of credit of $500
million.
• Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari gave this
information in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on
March 15.

Green National Highways Corridor Project
• It will assist the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to
construct 781 km of highways.
• It will integrate safe and green technology designs such as local and
marginal materials, industrial by-products and other bioengineering
solutions.
• It will also support the Bharatmala Pariyojana programme.

Joint India Singapore Exercise 'Bold Kurukshetra' concludes at
Jodhpur
• The Singapore Army and Indian Army participated in the 13th edition
of Exercise 'Bold Kurukshetra', a bilateral exercise at Jodhpur Military
Station, India from 6 to 13 March.

• For the first time, both the armies participated in a command post
exercise, which included battalion and brigade level planning elements
and computer wargaming.

• Organized by the Indian Army, soldiers from the 42nd Battalion,


Singapore Armored Regiment and the Armored Brigade of the Indian
Army participated in the exercise.

Exercise 'Bold Kurukshetra'
• The exercise is conducted within the scope of joint military training and
exercise between the Singapore Army and the Indian Army.
• First held in 2005, the exercise underlines the strong and long-standing
bilateral defense ties between the two countries.
• This exercise enhances cooperation between the two armies.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das wins 'Governor of the Year'
award at Central Banking Awards 2023

• Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das has been honoured with the
'Governor of the Year 2023 Award' by the international publication
Central Banking.

• Mr Das has been heading the central bank since December 2018.

• He has been awarded for successfully navigating the financial markets


through various crises, including the pandemic and inflation caused by
the war in Ukraine.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the central bank of India and was
established on April 1, 1935.

• It is responsible for regulating India's monetary policy and managing


the country's currency and foreign exchange reserves.

India world's largest arms importer: SIPRI report 2023

• According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's


(SIPRI) 2023 report, India will become the world's leading arms
importer in 2022.

• According to this report, between the years 2013-17 and 2018-22,


India's arms imports have decreased by 11 percent.

• According to the report's findings, over the past five years, the US had
the world's largest military expenditure, accounting for 40% of the
global share, followed by Russia (16%), and France (11%).

Denmark becomes the first country in the world to import CO2
and store it under the sea

• Denmark has launched a project to store carbon dioxide 1,800 metres


below the North Sea, making it the first country in the world to bury
CO2 imported from another country.

• CO2 burial project, where carbon is injected into the site of an old oil
field to prevent further warming of the atmosphere.

• The project is called "Greensand" and is being led by British chemical


Giant Ineos and German oil company Wintershall Dia.

• The project aims to store eight million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030.

Surekha Yadav becomes Asia's first woman loco pilot to
operate Vande Bharat Express
• Asia’s first woman loco pilot Surekha Yadav has become the first
female to operate the newly-introduced semi-high speed Vande
Bharat Express train.

• She piloted a semi-high speed train between Solapur station and


Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai on 13 March.
• The train left Solapur station on March 13 on schedule and reached
CSMT five minutes before its scheduled arrival for a journey of over
450 km.
• Yadav set another record in Central Railway by becoming the first
woman loco pilot of Vande Bharat Express.

• Surekha Yadav, a resident of Satara in the western Maharashtra
region, became India's first woman train driver in 1988.

• She has won many awards at the state and national level for his
achievements so far.

• Mumtaz Kazi, who has the distinction of being Asia's first suburban
motor woman, piloted the K99 local, a women's special train running
between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai and

• Uttarakhand govt approves 10 % horizontal reservation for statehood
activists in state govt jobs
• In the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh
Dhami, the proposal to give 10 percent horizontal reservation in
government jobs to the state agitators and their dependents was
approved.
• Along with this, it was decided to increase the MLA Area Development
Fund from Rs.3.75 crore to Rs.5 crore.
• The cabinet also approved the new solar energy policy of the state.
• It also approved the setting up of an Authority on Land Acquisition,
Rehabilitation and Resettlement in each district headed by a District
Judge or an Additional District Judge.

Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupts, covering villages in
ash
• Indonesia's Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes,
erupted on March 12, sending smoke and ash spreading over nearby
villages.
• The volcano is located on the island of Java near Yogyakarta, the
cultural capital of Indonesia.
• The ash cloud has reached 9,600 feet above the surface. The area up
to seven kilometers from the blast site has been restricted.
• In 2010 a major eruption of the volcano killed over 300 people.
• Indonesia, which has about 130 active volcanoes, lies on the Pacific
"Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high
volcanic and seismic activity.

• Mount Merapi is a volcanic mountain on the island of Java in


Indonesia and is the most active volcano in Indonesia.

• It was discovered by Mr. Morris in 1754 and is also known as the

Oscars 2023: RRR's 'Naatu Naatu' wins Best Original Song
award
• The song 'Naatu Naatu' from the Indian film RRR has won the Oscar in
the Best Original Song category at the 95th Oscar Awards.
• RRR is the first Indian film to be nominated for Academy Awards in
the last two decades, while 'Naatu Naatu' was the first Indian song to
be nominated for an Oscar.
• Music director MM Keeravani received the award.
• This Telugu song is sung by Kaal Bhairav & Rahul Sipligunj. 'Naatu-
naatu' means 'to dance'.
• The song is picturized on actors Ram Charan and Jr NTR, in which their
peppy dance moves have also been appreciated.

Indian Railways to become Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030

• Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav recently said in a written


reply to a question in the Lok Sabha that the Indian Railways is working
on a mission mode to become the largest green railway in the world
and towards becoming a "net zero carbon emitter" by 2030.

• Indian Railways has taken several initiatives to reduce carbon


emissions which include the use of energy efficient technologies.

• Indian Railways is starting production of three phase electric


locomotives with regenerative features, use of Head on Generation
(HOG) technology, use of LED lights in buildings and coaches, use of
star rated equipment.

• Li Qiang was appointed as the new Premier or Prime Minister of China


by the Chinese Parliament on March 11, 2023.

Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag, Tehri top landslide index: ISRO
report
• According to the recently released 'Landslide Atlas' report of ISRO's
Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC), the two
hilly districts of Uttarakhand, Rudraprayag and Tehri, are most prone
to landslides.

• The National Remote Sensing Center has released a list of 147 districts
prone to landslides across the country, in which Rudraprayag is at
number one and Tehri at number two.

• Kerala's Thrissur and Palakkad districts are at 3rd and 5th spots
respectively.

• In Maharashtra, a new initiative called 'Beggar Free City' was launched

British Architect David Chipperfield Wins 2023 Pritzker Prize

• British architect Sir David Chipperfield has won the 2023 Pritzker
Architecture Prize.

• He is a civic architect and urban planner with an extensive work plan


of projects built across 3 continents.
• David Chipperfield is the 52nd winner of the award, established in
1979.
• Francis Kéré (Germany) was awarded the prize in 2022, and Anne
Lacton (France) and Jean-Philippe Vasal (France) in 2021.
• The 45th Pritzker Prize ceremony honoring David Chipperfield will be
held in Athens, Greece in May 2023.

World's eighth most polluted country according to Swiss firm
IQAir report: India
• Swiss firm IQAir Report has released its 'World Air Quality Report',
according to which India has moved up to the eighth position in the list
of world's most polluted countries in 2022 as compared to fifth
position last year.

• According to this report, 39 of the world's 50 most polluted cities are


in India.

• The top 10 most polluted countries include Chad, Iraq, Pakistan,


Bahrain, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Kuwait, India, Egypt and
Tajikistan.

• According to it, the transport sector is responsible for 20-35% of PM

2.5 pollution in India.

LIC appoints Tablesh Pandey as managing director

National Immunisation Day: 16 March

• Every year on 16 March, India observes National Immunization Day to


raise awareness about polio eradication worldwide.

• Vaccines have successfully reduced the spread of many deadly diseases


such as measles, chickenpox, tetanus, rubella, polio and, more
recently, COVID-19.
• National Immunization Day was first observed in 1995 when the Pulse
Polio Immunization Program was launched to eradicate polio from
India.
• On March 16, 1995, the first dose of oral polio vaccine was
administered in India as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative
of the World Health Organization (WHO), which began in 1988.
