PROCEDURE:
Legal Definition it refers to ammunition as a “loaded shell” for rifles, muskets, carbines, shotguns,
revolvers and pistols from which a ball, bullet, shot, shell or other missile may be fired by means of
gunpowder or other explosives.
The term also includes ammunition for air rifles as mentioned elsewhere in the Code.
Technical Definition the term ammunition refers to a group of cartridges or to a single unit cartridge-
meaning a complete unfired unit consisting of a bullet, cartridge case, gunpowder and primer.
The term may also refers to a “single round.”
The term cartridge is derived from the word “charta,” the Latin word for paper.
Later on, it came through the French word “cartouche,” meaning a roll of paper, which indicates that the origin
cartridges were not brass gliding-metal tipped units which we are familiar with today.
