2nd year syllabus 2022-2023: Reading and Writing

Topic: reading and writing (2nd semester only)

Textbook: Headway Academic Skills level 2: Reading, writing and Study skills by Sarah Philpot

Routine: 2 lectures each week > explanation, exercises, practice.

Equipment: course book, notebook, dictionary (English-English ), synonyms dictionary / thesaurus, phrasebook
(optional), highlighters/ sticky notes (optional).

Goals of the course:

- To read actively (using the active reading skills)


- To expand vocabulary and to learn vocabulary learning skills
- To gain knowledge from text and to discuss the material
- To increase reading fluency and efficiency
- To think critically about a text.
- To master writing basics (punctuation, organization, cohesion etc)
- Learn about essays.
- How to use external sources in writing
- Know the features of good writing

Class rules:

- Come to the lecture on time (whether on campus or online). If you’re going to be late, please inform the
teacher. If a student is not present within 5minutes of a lecture, they’ll be marked absent.
- If a student has an excuse for absence he/she should inform the teacher so they can be excused. This also
applies to class trips.
- Do all exercises given and hand in assignments on time.
- Do not cheat in assignments and exams
- Always bring course book.
- Respect each other.
- No mobile phones except for dictionary use.

Health and safety.

- Wear a mask whenever possible. It is compulsory to wear a mask when entering my office.
- If sick, take a leave of absence, regardless of corona or not.
- If you’re absent due to sickness, it’s your duty to keep up with lessons.

Extra:

- Moodle will still be used for the course. Use Moodle to contact the teacher and to obtain course book,
handouts and news.
- The student supervisor is in charge of the class. Should there be any problems, inform the supervisor. If the
problem is not resolved go to the teacher supervisor.
