The process of becoming an effective teacher

The animated film Kung Fu Panda is an excellent movie depicting

a teaching process. Becoming an effective teacher is a
process. Process means a journey with a series of steps. While
different teachers have his/her unique experiences, Master Shifu
in the video clip walk-through the following steps: meet a life-
changing question, meditation, observation understands the
learner, teaching and learning is a 2-way process, assessment is
integral, and learning must be enjoyable.
First, the journey starts with a life-changing question.  As an
experienced teacher, Master Shifu has preconceived notions of
teaching. Po, a seemingly untrainable but destined to be the
dragon warrior, asks Master Shifu: "How are you going to change
this into a dragon warrior?" "I don't know,'' Master Shifu
answered. Master Shifu likely has experienced cognitive
dissonance. In this scenario, Master Shiefu has experienced
mental discomfort that results from holding two conflicting beliefs,
values, or attitudes.

Second, because of the question, Master Shifu meditates on who

he is as a teacher. The challenges they are facing because of the
threats and come-up with a solution given the situation at hand.
He meditated in a quiet place. Studies have shown that peaceful
places do help in reflection. Example, Bellen (2020) said that …

Third, keen observation helps us understand who our learners

are. He saw Po jump 10 ft above the ground. “How was it
possible?” Food must have been the trigger because when Po
was distressed, eating was the outlet of emotions. Before the start
of the training camp, Shifu admits "I can not train the way I do."
When Shifu shows the "siopao", Po's reaction was priceless. It
shows food motivates the trainee. There are theories that can
explain this: Maslow’s Theory and Classical Conditioning.
Maslow’ hierarchy of needs said that… while Classical
Conditioning states that ...

Fourth, teaching and learning is a 2-way process. This is evident

when Shifu demonstrates a skill, they both do.

Fifth, assessment is integral. "You are free to eat", Shifu teased

Po. Of course it signals that when Po can outsmart the master he
is free to eat. This way, it allows Po to demonstrate his skills. …

Sixth, learning must be enjoyable. Po's body language shows

when he "bumps" (body-han, i can not find an appropriate term)
master shifu with a sign of appreciation. “It was awesome”, Po
exclaimed.
In summary, these elements can contribute to the journey of
becoming an effective teacher.
