EXPERIMENT ACTIVITY: “BATTERY LIGHT BULB”

Materials:
 Wire
 Low-voltage LED bulb
 Battery
 Switch

Procedure:
1. Acquire a small low-voltage LED bulb of 3V or less.
2. Provide a small toggle switch with hook-ups for electrical wires.
3. Wrap the end of 1 of the electrical wires connected to the battery around the toggle
switch power terminal.
4. Use an additional electrical wire to connect the side of the toggles switch labelled for
accessories to the LED bulb.

Note:
A toggle switch is an electrical switch with a knob that you can flip back and forth to turn an
accessory on and off. It works by blocking or connecting 2 wires in the electrical circuit.

Guide Questions:
1. What is the role of battery in the activity?
 The battery in the electric circuit releases charged particles at the terminal and
takes in charged particles at the other.
2. What does the battery supply to light the LED bulb?
 The battery supplies the charges with electric potential energy. This energy is
used to light a bulb or power a devices as the charges move through the circuit.
3. How does electricity flow from a battery to light the bulb?
 Electron flow from the negative end of the battery through the wire and the light
bulb and back to the positive end of the battery.
4. What is electric potential energy?
 Electric potential energy is a potential energy (measured in joules) that results
from conservative coulomb forces and is associated with the configuration of a
particular set of point charges within a defined system. An object may be said to
have electric potential energy by virtue of either its own electric charge or its
relative position to other electrically charged objects.

Conclusion:
 As a positive charge move through the battery, it gains potential energy and gains
electric potential. The point of highest energy within a battery is the positive
terminal.
 As a positive charge moves through the external circuit, it loses potential energy
and loses electric potential. The point of highest energy within the external circuit
is closest to the positive terminal.
