Granular soils such as gravels, sand, and non plastic silts have effective stress failure envelopse
that pass through the origin indicating that c’ = 0 for these materials. In fact, only cemented sand and
some overconsolidated clay appear to have true c’ value. According Bolton, 1986 the value 𝟇’ for sand
depends on mineralogy and packig arrangement that is related to relative density and effective confining
stress level. Range of 𝟇’ for clean quarzitic (silica) sans are typically 30° ≤𝟇’≤50°, whereas calcareous
(corraline) sand may exhibit somewhat higher values. Rockfill has grades that shown figure 73 and
summarized in table 31
