A Japanese company was concerned with the excessive variability in the dimensions of tiles that it produced.

Seven
factors were identified as possible sources of serious variability. These were labeled A through G, where : 
A = amount of limestone (5% or 1%)
B = coarser (existing or finer)
C = amount of agalmatolite (43% or 53%)
D = type of agalmatolite (existing or new)
E = raw material charging quantity (1300 or 1200 kg)
F = amount of waste return ( 0% or 4%)
G = amount of feldspar (7% or 5%)
Here a full factorial would require 2^7 = 128 experiments. Using Taguchi's approach and assuming no interactions
are present, one can use the orthogonal arrays of an L8 (2^7) design. Taking the number of defective tikes per 1000
as the response (Y), the results are shown in the following table
