A furnace is a device used for heating. The name derives from Latin fornax, oven. The earliest
furnace was excavated at Balakot, a site of the Indus Valley Civilization, dating back to its
mature phase (c. 2500-1900 BC). The furnace was most likely used for the manufacturing of
ceramic object.

An oven is an enclosed compartment for heating, baking or drying. It is most commonly used in
cooking and pottery. Ovens used in pottery are also known as kilns. An oven used for heating
or for industrial processes is called a furnace or industrial oven. In modern times the oven is
used to cook and heat food in many households across the globe.

An autoclave is a device to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high

pressure saturated steam at 121 °C or more, typically for 15 to 20 minutes depending on the size
of the load and the contents. It was invented by Charles Chamberland in 1879, although a
precursor known as the steam digester was created by Denis Papin in 1679. The name comes
from Greek auto, ultimately meaning self, and Latin clavis meaning key — a self-locking device.
