ACTIVITY SHEET # 2

TECHNOLOGY AND LIVELIHOOD EDUCATION- AFA 10

Content Standard:

Performance Standard:

Most Essential Learning Competencies: “Land Preparation (Irrigated - Rainfed)”

Objectives:
1. acquire proper understanding in land preparation (irrigated-rainfed);
2. perform land evaluation ; and
3. appreciate the importance of learning the proper way of land preparation (irrigated-rainfed)

Land Preparation (Irrigated - Rainfed)

 High yield in rice production could be traced back to land preparation. Many problems in cultural
management practices could be prevented with well-puddled and well-leveled rice paddies.
 Proper soil preparation serves to level the field for uniform distribution of irrigation water, fertilizers
and pesticides.
 If land preparation is not uniform, growth of plant is uneven causing variations of plant development
and stage maturity resulting in possible decrease in harvest.
 Land preparation should be started at least four weeks before transplanting.

1. Plowing - the process of breaking up the soil usually 15 cm. deep to incorporate and cover inorganic matter.
Can be done through:
A. Animal Drawn Plowing

B. By Machine/ Tractor Plowing

Steps in Plowing:
1. Remove from the field anything that may cause injury to the plowmen and farm
animals or damage to the implements
2. Cut tall grasses and remove stubbles that may interfere.
3. In irrigated fields, flood the field 2 – 7 days before plowing to soften the soil.
4. Plow under the weeds and stubbles 10 to 15 cm deep, three to four weeks
before transplanting.

2. Harrowing ( Surko in Bisaya) – to cultivate, pulverize and level the soil. It can done
be through:

A. Animal Drawn Harrowing

B. By Machine/ Tractor Harrowing

Steps in Harrowing:
1. Harrow the field, about 2-5 cm to expose the high and low areas.
2. Harrow the field 2-3 times depending on the soil condition.
3. Use enough water to prevent the field from drying and hardening.
4. Wait for 7 to 10 days between two successive harrowing’s.
5. Harrow the field at least twice with one week interval for irrigated field

3. Rotavating- This method of land preparation is employed with the use of a rotary
tiller or rotavator drawn by a tractor.

After the last leveling there should be no higher or lower levels of the rice paddies.

Cleaning and Repairing Levees of Rice Paddies

 Just after plowing, the levees must be repaired to prevent seepage from the paddy.
 Look for rat holes, cracks or breaks, and plaster with mud.
 Fix the levees after the first plowing.
 Trim the thick portions of both sides of the levees using a bolo.
 Dikes must be cleaned to remove pest
 Maintain at 15 cm high x 20 cm wide to prevent rat burrowing.

ACTIVITY 1
Modified True or False. Directions. Indicate whether the statement is true or false. If false, change the
identified word or phrase to make the statement true. Kindly write your answer in your answer sheet.

1. In high and low areas harrowing the field is approximately 2-5 cm depth.
2. Harrowing the field once a week is necessary in rice production.
3. To prevent the field from drying and hardening it is advisable to use enough amount of water.
4. Farmers usually wait for 7 to 10 days between two successive harrowing’s
5. Repairing of levees can be done anytime to prevent seepage from the paddy.
6. The rat holes, cracks or breaks must be plastered with any kind of soil.
7. Fixing of levees after the first plowing must be observed in rice production.
8. Trimming the thick portions of both sides of the levees using scythe.
9. One way to remove pest is by cleaning the dike properly.
10. Maintaining at 10 cm high x 20 cm wide of levees are important to prevent rat burrowing.
