BRØNNUMS HUS OFFICE CLUB,

COPENHAGEN
A historic apartment building in the heart of Copenhagen,
Brønnums Hus has been completely restored and revitalised
as high-end office premises with an uncompromising
sense of detail and respect for history.

Brønnums Hus was originally built in 1866 as private apartments for

the Copenhagen upper class. Ever since the legendary Café Brønnum
opened in the ground floor in 1871, the building has flourished with ac-
tors, writers and dancers from the nearby Royal Danish Theatre. Even
Hans Christian Andersen, Denmark’s most famous author, was a fre-
quent visitor to families living in the building during his lifetime.

BRØNNUMS HUS OFFICE CLUB, COPENHAGEN 4 ege carpets

Just short of 150 years later, contemporary designers were faced with
the challenge of imbuing this rich cultural history into high end ser-
viced offices and meeting rooms. To combine the surroundings with
the modern look and feel needed for a facility like that, the idea was to
make interiors based on a design hybrid of Nordic design, lavish bou-
tique hotels and upscale clubs in New York and London, all respecting
and including the rich history of the building.

An exclusive enclave for the creative elite

All offices in the luxurious premises, seating a total of 140 people, share
general services such as reception, secretarial services, concierge
services and catering, plus exclusive conference and meeting rooms.
Designer Mikkel Küster of MAKWäRK had this to say: “The brief was
to accommodate companies wanting their offices and surroundings
to leave a lasting impression with business connections and custom-
ers. You could say the Office Club is for everybody, but not for just
anybody.”
The end result clearly shows this. In the unique and lavish spaces,
there is a different experience around every corner, with many playful
and flamboyant references to the building’s history as an integral part
of Danish creative, cultural and intellectual life for the past 150 years.

Every carpet design is a work of art
dimension in the rooms.”
In Brønnums Hus Office Club, the car-
pet design is a crucial design element
in fostering an atmosphere of creative expression and exclusivity.
“Each carpet is a work of art,” says Küster, “and had it not been for
the design freedom we were allowed with custom designs, we would
have missed an extraordinary dimension in the rooms.”
The experience begins in the oval-shaped reception room which
gives a foretaste of what is to come with a plush, dark carpet tailored to
the room thick enough for stiletto heels to sink into without disturbing.
The custom designed carpet features an abstract floral design based
on a restored wallpaper from the building’s original Golden Salon.
In an adjoining meeting room, the colour scheme is based on
deep, deep petrol to compliment the breathtaking views of the cob-
ble square Kongens Nytorv and give contrast to the classicistic Royal
Danish Theatre.

BRØNNUMS HUS OFFICE CLUB, COPENHAGEN 6 ege carpets

In the Golden Salon, the carpet includes design elements from the
original wallpaper in an imperial style design to remind all who enter
of the rich history of the building, not only culturally, but economically
as well.
The wallpaper forms the starting point for the carpet design once
again along the corridors, with the wallpaper’s golden lines placed on
a blue-grey background. This creates a colour balance resemblant
of the buildings history, with the opulent historical palettes of gold,
cream and vibrant blue complimenting the more conservative Nordic
office palette of white, grey and dark blue.

Moving up to modern motifs

Moving upwards, the interiors become no less lavish but with a mod-
ern edge and vibrant carpet designs by UK designer Tom Dixon.
Carpet is not only used on floors in these Alice in Wonderland like
interiors, where Tom Dixon designed carpet has also been used to up-
holster classic wing-backed chairs on the upper floors.
So successful has the concept for the Brønnums Hus Office Club
been, that the owners are expanding into another adjoining historic
building and have opened an additional three Office Clubs in historic
buildings elsewhere in Copenhagen, each with its own unique flavour.

Key takeaways from this amazing design:

Use carpet to create an atmosphere of luxury and exclusivity, taking cues from
yy
the history of the building.
yyCompliment the views and tie them in with other decorative elements on
floors, walls and ceilings.
yy Carpets are not just for floors: Use custom carpet designs as upholstery or
even for wall and ceiling decoration.

GARDEN STATE HOTEL,

MELBOURNE
A former textile mill in the heart of Melbourne has been
transformed into a sprawling, four-storey bar and hospitality
venue with a hidden botanical haven at its heart.

For the past 100 years, the state of Victoria in southern Australia has
been known as the Garden State. Nestled in the center of Melbourne,
deep in the heartland of Victoria lies what used to be an old textile mill.
Today, this historic building houses the ambitious hospitality venue
aptly also named the Garden State. With a verdant, tiered, multi-level
beer garden at its centre, the bar and restaurant has been designed
as an oasis in the middle of Melbourne’s CBD network of intimate and
lively laneways lined with boutiques, galleries and cafes.

GARDEN STATE HOTEL, MELBOURNE 9 ege carpets

In an interview with Designboom, Justin Northrop, Director of Techne
Architecture + Interior Design stated: “The dominant idea for the in-
terior was to offer patrons a garden respite, a light-filled green space
offering relief from the hard surfaces of the city. Wheeling around a
courtyard are a progression of spaces that borrow from the botanical
theme but also have their own distinct character. Good visual con-
nections encourage flowing movement around the venue and circula-
tion is arranged to allow users to discover the different areas in a fairly
freeform way.”

A green oasis in the city centre

The 2000-square-metre project preserves the original factory’s heri-
tage 1896 façade and much of the original saw-tooth roof while open-
ing its central bays to form the terraced beer garden that has the feel
of a Victorian-era conservatory, a hidden botanical haven to be ex-
plored.
The project involved the creation of a street level public bar at the
front of the site and a new five-level structure at the rear.
This contemporary pub catering for up to 840 guests is a versatile
space, with different rooms and areas to cater to varied audiences and
functions. While the front bar is a vibrant community watering hole,
the pub services the entire hospitality spectrum, from casual get-to-
gethers to fine dining and corporate events in a series of bespoke din-
ing areas and beautiful private function rooms.

GARDEN STATE HOTEL, MELBOURNE 10 ege carpets

Carpet continues the botanical theme
Distinctive carpet designs throughout continue the botanical theme,
while contributing to the vibrant yet cosy atmosphere and providing
superior acoustics.
The basement level Rose Garden Bar is an intimate cocktail bar
with chandeliers and walls decorated with giant rose motifs painted
by local artisans. The plush, wall to wall custom carpet continues the
theme with an abstract design of over-scaled roses.
Other spaces feature carpets in a delicate fern design, an optical
illusion geometric design and a swirling design in muted natural tones
evocative of the patterning of sandstone rock formations.
It is only geographically appropriate for this venue, deep in the
heartland of nature-rich Victoria, surrounded by the sprawling city of
Melbourne, to choose this theme of combining urbanism and nature,
with carpet designs that bring together the distinctive yet harmonious
areas.

Key takeaways from this amazing design:

Custom carpet designs can be used as a key element to convey a continuing

yy
theme throughout a design, while also differentiating the functions of different
spaces and providing variety from one adjoining space to another.
yyUse carpet design both aesthetically and functionally, like Garden State did
with thematic carpets serving an acoustic purpose

HÔTEL DE JOBO, PARIS

Inspired by the life and style of Josephine Bonaparte, Hôtel de JoBo
is an intimate and flamboyant ode to the woman who loved
roses and first introduced the leopard print rug.

When the owners of Parisian Hôtel de JoBo first spoke with Fran-
co-American decorator Bambi Sloan about the interiors of their new
hotel, they suggested taking inspiration from Marie-Antoinette’s uni-
verse. “I proposed a different idea,” says Sloan in an interview with
Luxury Interiors, “because I couldn’t transpose Versailles to JoBo. I
immediately thought of Josephine Bonaparte, wife of Napoleon Bona-
parte. This woman had a crazy history. She left the Antilles, 16 years
old, after marrying the useless Beauharnais.”

HÔTEL DE JOBO, PARIS 13 ege carpets

From Josephine to JoBo
In today’s world of celebrity magazines and social media, Josephine
Bonaparte would probably be known as JoBo. An exemplar of French
elegance and charming frivolity, Josephine Bonaparte is also famed
for her secret garden at Château de Malmaison, where she planted
240 species of roses collected from all over the world.
The interior design of the four-star hotel, which is built on the re-
mains of a 17th century convent takes Josephine Bonaparte’s fanta-
sised alter ego, JoBo, as its muse and the thread runs through the dec-
oration, rethought and shaken up with a good dose of humour.

An eruption of roses
Decorator Bambi Sloan blurs the lines of the Directoire style of Na-
poleon and Josephine in an eruption of roses, every possible tone of
pink, lozenge-shaped motifs, arrows and marquetry. The tone is set
from the moment guests pass through the carriage entrance.

HÔTEL DE JOBO, PARIS 14 ege carpets

Here, a Napoleonic style tent is designed to evoke Josephine the lover,
rather than the battlefields of her husband, and welcomes the visitor
beneath a shower of roses originally painted by Redoute in the rose
garden of Malmaison.

Lavish use of leopard print

All carpets were custom-designed by Sloan: leopard-patterned car-
pets sprinkled with roses for the bar, lounges and reception, a bed
of roses for the corridors and trompe l’oeil marquetry for the guest
rooms. Sloan decorated all the exposed beams as would befit Jose-
phine, and reinterpreted century-old wallpaper prints discovered in
museums to dress the walls, and sometimes ceilings, with roses, birds
and black swans like those that inhabit the lake at Malmaison.
The design is inspired by the Neoclassical Directoire style, right
down to the detailing of all the carpentry and inclusion of Josephine
Bonaparte’s beloved Somalian leopard print. It was, after all, Josephine
who we have to thank for the first leopard print rug.
It’s her contemporary alter ego, JoBo, however, who reigns supreme
as the mistress of the ebullient eccentricity with a rock and roll twist
that Bambi Sloan has created for her.

Key takeaways from this amazing design:

If you have a great source of inspiration, take it all the way through every detail
yy
of the design
yyFind and use historical references that match the mood of the design, even
though the building itself might not have inherent history.
yy Shake up your chosen reference for a modern take with a sense of humour
yy Use custom-design carpet to tie the whole theme together and create
different moods in public and private zones

CRAFT LONDON BAR,

GREENWICH
By installing carpet on the ceiling, Design Research Studio,
under the creative direction of Tom Dixon, turned things
upside-down for the interior of the Craft London Bar.

Located on London’s Greenwich Peninsula, Craft London is a popular

cocktail bar sited on the top floor of one of two glass pavilions by
Marks Barfield Architects. For the interiors, Design Research Studio,
under the creative direction of famed designer Tom Dixon, employed
an eclectic mix of materials, patterns and colours. The colour palette
is subdued, with furnishings in deep reds, purples and yellows against
a black cork floor.

CRAFT LONDON BAR, GREENWICH 17 ege carpets

The focus is on the great pewter bar, which wraps around the curved
space, and on the amazing ceiling – a carpet in soft pinks and blues
inspired by the sunset colours on view through the glass walls of an
early evening.
As the team at Design Research Studio explains: “We wanted to
add as many soft textures as possible and, as the space is glazed all
around and has minimal wall space,
we decided to make the most of
the ceiling. Placing carpets on the “Placing carpets on the ceiling

that reflects the amazing sunset
visible from the space, with the
cloud shapes and colours being
the main inspiration. We had a great result working with ege on the
Greenwich project. We thought we would need to create a custom
pattern but were happily surprised when we discovered the ‘Fields of
Flow’ collection.”

CRAFT LONDON BAR, GREENWICH 18 ege carpets

Designed by ege designer Signe Fink Nørgaard, the ‘Fields of Flow’
collection reflects the tension between traditional Asian culture and
Scandinavian design, a strong fusion based on respect for feng shui
symbols reinterpreted through the eyes of a young Danish designer.
Nørgaard explains: “Through abstractions and creative thinking the
elements have been clarified, twisted, simplified, enlarged and beau-
tified over and over again into a contemporary interpretation of old
values.”
The watercolour-like design chosen for the ceiling is the result of
an ancient Chinese technique used in a modern and powerful way
that adds a translucent and artistic feeling to the design. The Craft
London project is a perfect example of how a standard carpet design
can be recoloured and transformed into a result that exceeds the ex-
pectations of the customer. And of – quite literally – turning traditional
design methods upside-down.

Key takeaways from this amazing design:

Don’t just think of carpet purely as a flooring material. It can be used on walls,
yy
and even ceilings as seen here, to create incredible visual effects as well as
improving acoustics.
yyYou don’t always need a fully customized carpet to stand out or fulfill your
design vision. Standard carpet designs can be recoloured in any tones of your
choice to create a unique carpet for your project.

University of Melbourne’s new Faculty of Arts building, designed by

architectural firms ARM and Architectus, is wrapped in swirling metal
fins imprinted with images of ancient figurines. Inside, genuine an-
cient objects from the university’s 23 wide-ranging, museum-quality
cultural collections have been placed in climate-controlled display
cabinets in a mix of high visibility and unexpected locations across
seven floors.

Museum-quality lighting and acoustics throughout (even structural
columns are upholstered) create a hushed, reverential atmosphere
around the extraordinary objects placed throughout, even along busy
corridors.
The interiors, however, have nothing fusty or museum-like about
them. Playful, richly decorative, wildly varied and digitally integrated,
together they form a ‘cabinet of curiosities’ that invite students and
staff to interconnect in ways beyond the traditional lecture theatre.
A soaring, four-storey atrium features contemporary cloisters at
ground level and a spectacular, upholstered central staircase. Themed
student lounge areas resemble hip hotel lounges and even the lifts are
exuberantly decorated.
Teaching spaces and student lounges in themes of The Warehouse
and The Salon are enlivened with vintage wallpapers, ornate curtains
and custom-designed carpets styled along themes as varied as 1970s
Vivienne Westwood tartan and cool grey botanicals.

Extending the possibilities
Says Principal at ARM Architecture, Andrea Wilson, “ege carpets ex-
tended our possibilities beyond typical standard requirements for
acoustic control, durability and ongoing supply and maintenance.
Their huge selection of standard patterns coupled with custom de-
sign options enabled us to pursue concepts well beyond standard
palettes.
“With the Montgolfier standard collection, ege carpets maximised
our ability to select from themes offsetting the warehouse theme and
the custom print and the Metroplitan collection truly express the sa-
lon theme.
“These environments just couldn’t have felt complete without the
flexibility of selection that ege offers. Such themes as The Conserva-
tory, Urban Jungle, The Bedouin Tent, The Parlour and The Tea House
could never have emerged with the same degree of character without
the choice of pattern, colour match and contrast.”

learning, use a large amount of carpet to improve acoustics. Consider even
upholstering elements like structural columns and using carpet on walls and
the ceiling as well to enhance this effect
yyUse carpets as your primary, theme-establishing canvas for large, open spaces
where other elements like architecture and furniture are out of your control or
pre-configured by your client.
yy By engaging with a customised carpet supplier you can select wallpapers
and fabrics from such diverse fashion drivers as Vivienne Westwood, Tricia
Guild, Ellie Cashman, Job Studio, Wall & Deco, Flavor Paper and Cole & Sons to
achieve exact colour matches for the carpets.

GOOGLE CAMPUS, DUBLIN

A thriving new campus for Google’s European headquarters
in Ireland was designed to boost the spirit of innovation.

With over 47,000 square metres of office space, Google’s Dublin cam-
pus spreads across four buildings in the heart of the historic dock-
lands district. An amazing workplace for Google’s ever-expanding
sales, marketing, finance and engineering teams, the campus is the
place of employment for people from more than 65 countries, speak-
ing over 45 languages.
The tallest of the four campus building is the newly constructed
14-storey building ‘Google Docks’. Two other buildings – ‘Gasworks
House’ and ‘Gordon House’ – were already home to Google and were
completely refitted. A fourth building, ‘One Grand Canal’ was also
newly fitted out.

For the Masterplan, the architects had to find a smart solution to the
nearly impossible – to create a stimulating and interactive campus
within a bustling environment in the midst of the inner city.

A balanced, healthy work environment

Apart from innovative office spaces, the Masterplan required the suc-
cessful organisation of a multitude of additional functions, including
five restaurants, 42 micro-kitchens and communication hubs, games
rooms, a fitness centre, a pool, wellness areas, a learning and devel-
opment centre doubling as conference centre, tech stops, over 400
informal and formal meeting rooms and phone booths and much,
much more.
All these functions are part of the holistic work philosophy of Goo-
gle, encouraging a balanced, healthy work environment and enabling
as much interaction and communication between Googlers as possi-
ble.
With a total floor area of almost 50,000 square metres, the design-
ers were able to take full advantage of the creative freedom allowed to
them by the client to specify both hard flooring and an amazing range
of carpet designs.

A vast array of diverse moods and atmospheres
Flooring was first selected for functional requirements such as acous-
tics, maintenance and wear, with carpet tiles mostly selected over wall

requirement.

tial functional layer had been assigned, the further differentiation of
flooring finishes was based on

lounges, games rooms, large

the perfect scene for bolder and
more sophisticated patterns,” say the designers, “and this is where fea-
ture carpets, including those with unique custom patterns, can get
the appreciation they deserve.”

From mimicking nature to celebrating Irish achievements

Carpet design runs the gamut from faux natural finishes such as
stonework, wood, grass and sand to unique designs incorporating
Ireland’s ‘prides and joys’, including an excerpt from James Joyce’s Ul-
ysses, sheet music from The Pogues’ song ‘Fairytale of New York’ and
traditional Celtic ornamental patterns.
And carpet is not just confined to floors. In an informal meeting area,
steps are covered in fluffy, grass-like carpet to double as seating and
in one games room, an amazing snake-patterned carpet continues to
slither up one wall.

GOOGLE CAMPUS, DUBLIN 28 ege carpets

Following Google’s ‘Be Green’ guideline, only environmentally friendly
and sustainable materials were selected for the fit-out, also leading to
the project winning the first LEED Platinum certification in Ireland.
In the world of custom carpets, the designers found the perfect
combination of all these project requirements and visions: “As well as
fulfilling Google’s directives to ‘Be Green’, ‘Be Creative’ and ‘Be Inno-
vative’, the carpets used in the project also supported the client’s idea
of creating a cosy and homey office where everyone gets to feel com-
fortable and relaxed – almost like their own homes!”

Key takeaways from this amazing design:

Exciting carpet designs can be used to create stimulating ‘mini-universes’ in a

yy
large fit-out.
yyUse plainer carpet in desk areas and bolder carpet designs in areas where they
will be fully appreciated.
yy Using carpet tiles gives easy access to under-floor cabling for maintenance
purposes, which is greatly appreciated by busy workplaces requiring high
flexibility and low down-time.
yy Use carpet for steps and wide stairs to double as seating or an informal

Inspired by elegant townhouses of a bygone era, this boutique

guest rooms, each featuring a different carpet design
inspired by the Art Deco movement of the 1930s.

Inspired by the elegant townhouses of London and New York, the

Valverde Hotel is nestled among the high-end stores on the avenue
often dubbed Lisbon’s Champs-Élysées, Avenida da Liberdade. The
street has long been a place for Lisbon’s high society to mingle and
was once exclusively reserved for Portuguese nobility. The Valverde
aims to honour this affluent past by creating a lavish inner-city retreat
that gives the feeling of luxury while avoiding pretentions.

“Each of the 25 rooms has a different colour
palette and personality. Soft furnishings are
plush and plentiful, from the gorgeous rugs

sofas upholstered in printed fabrics.”

The six-storey property opened its doors in September 2014, making

use of warm colours, comfort and a homey arrangement of space to
distinguish the hotel as an oasis of comfort and discreet luxury. The
mood of a townhouse of a bygone era is captured in an art deco-in-
spired mix of vintage and modern Portuguese character, with striped
walls, dark timber panelling, mood lighting, geometric rugs and 1950s
furnishings in jewel-like hues.

An elegant home away from home

The interiors, executed by interior designer Jose Pedro Vieira and ar-
chitect Diogo Rosa La of BASTIR, have been refurbished to give the
feel of an elegant home. The dark-hued, ambient and dimly-lit interior
begins in the petite reception area with its adjoining cosy lounge, and
extends throughout the entire hotel. Outdoors, guests have access to
a swimming pool and bar set in a lushly landscaped courtyard.

Art Deco inspirations

For the floors, Jose Pedro Vieira and Diogo Rosa La selected ege’s car-
pet collection Reconstructions of the 1930s, which was developed
to celebrate ege’s 75th anniversary and is a tribute to the decade in
which the company was founded.
The collection, which features 31 unique designs, creates a geomet-
ric universe of graphic patterns in monochrome grey, beige and black
tones. Inspired by Art Deco and designers of the 1930s such as Le
Corbusier, the collection uses the characteristic geometric shapes of
the era, including cubes, circles, cylinders and pyramids to gorgeous
graphic effect. This aesthetic fits perfectly with the style and story ho-
tel Valverde was aiming for. And we dare say their attempt was suc-
cessful, with each of their 25 unique rooms feeling like yet another
elegant townhouse of that wonderful, bygone era.

Key takeaways from this amazing design:

Use customization of a collection fitting your design theme to give each

guestroom its own individual character.
yyThrough your carpet designs, hint at historical references without slavishly
copying original designs, ensuring they reference the era while remaining
fresh and contemporary.

SIÉGE ORANGINA-SCHWEPPES,
NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE
For its new French headquarters, an international soft
drink brand wanted its employees to have sparkling
offices in acid colours true to its products.

Located in the New Time building on the Ile de la Jatte in Neuilly-sur-

Seine, the new group offices of soft drink brand Orangina-Schweppes
bring together 350 employees from several different locations into a
single space spread over more than 5700 square metres.
To create the interiors, the group called on design firm CD&B, spe-
cialists in the design of workplaces, asking them to meet the specifi-
cations “daring” and “impertinence on 5700 square metres”. Just like
the group’s brands, the offices are colourful and festive, encouraging
collaboration and teamwork, bringing together people and decom-
partmentalising spaces.

Sparkling offices in acid colours
True to its products, Orangina-Schweppes wished to provide its em-
ployees with sparkling offices in acid colours. The company also want-
ed the premises to be as functional as possible with 35 meeting rooms
and collaborative spaces with varied atmospheres and original names
such as the “Penelope Cruz Room”, the “Uma Thurman Room” and
the “Ramon Tafraise Room”, named after one of the mascots for their
Oasis brand. A large 340 square metre lounge area also allows em-
ployees to meet informally or simply take time out to relax.
Both timber flooring and a multitude of carpet designs are used
throughout the fit-out to delineate areas, while the carpets also pro-
vide much of the colour and sparkle to the design.

Carpets add bubble and fizz
Carpets with subtle bubble and fizzing designs allude to the brand’s
products, while others are in neutral tones and solid, bold brights.
In one large meeting room, a carpet in tones of grey is crossed with
bright yellow stripes like a level crossing. In another casual meeting
area, a meeting table is delineated with a rug in a black and white zig-
zag pattern while a lounge area is delineated by a graphic black and
white rug set on blue carpet.
Yet another conference room features large square carpet tiles
in black, white and green while a break-out area has carpet in grass
green with white lines for a relaxing game of mini-soccer, boulles or
laying down in the ’grass’.
With bold artwork, citrus toned furnishings and over-sized lamps,
the Paris offices of Orangina-Schweppes most certainly ‘pop’.

Key takeaways from this amazing design:

Use custom carpet and carpet tiles to allude to a company’s product lines
yy
through colour choice and abstract patterns.
yyVary up carpet designs to delineate different areas and spaces for different
purposes.
yy Use mid-tone colours to camouflage daily soil build-up in high traffic areas.
yy Use carpet in conference rooms and desk areas for its acoustic properties and
confine hard flooring to areas with low noise levels.

the city of Toulouse, the 90-room hotel, designed by Jean-Paul Viguier
Architecture, is six storeys high and offers 360 degree views of the
grounds of the Oncopole campus.

The circular building is composed of a base level pedestal that houses
the ground floor, reception and other hotel services, a six-storey high
cylinder that houses all 90 ho-
tel rooms and is comprised
of a radius span of about 15 “Neon orange, purple, pink or blue
metres, and a soaring atrium
that marks the centre of the
lines used for wayfinding around
building, allowing maximum the circular hallways and as accents

on all levels. in guest rooms, meeting rooms,

utilises for the air-condition-
ing system. This feature has
allowed the building to meet
high environmental standards, requirements and certifications.
The interiors, designed by Atelier Benoit Fazan, are bold, bright and
colourful, with wall to wall carpet as the flooring choice throughout.
For the lounge area, a custom soft ‘colour washed’ design has
been used for the carpeting, inset with curved lines accentuating the
curved seating arrangements lit by clusters of lamps on poles inset
into the seating.

The truly eye-catching detail, though, are the neon orange, purple,
pink or blue lines used for wayfinding around the circular hallways and
as accents in guest rooms, meeting rooms, reception and the spec-
tacular lounge area at the base of the central void.
This linear treatment gives a rhythm and life to spaces that would be
lacking with plain carpet, and lifts the otherwise neutral carpet design
on the guest room floors with its softer pattern of broken parallel lines.
The four-star hotel is spectacularly designed throughout. And the
both aesthetically pleasing and functionally effective little details in
the carpet, as well as their significant soundproofing, is no doubt part
of this overall impression, which has caused so many to enter and
leave the beautiful hotel muttering the same single word: “Wow”.

Key takeaways from this amazing design:

Use bold coloured lines on the carpets to assist with wayfinding – or opt for
yy
more subtle hints, that help visitors of a large hotel or office find their way
to the reception, lobby, restaurant or to the colour-coded area in which their
room is.
yyThe same coloured lines can further be used to delineate seating areas and
give rhythm and life to the various spaces.
yy Wall to wall carpet’s superior acoustic properties ensure privacy and
soundproofing not only between guest rooms but also between floors in
multi-storey hotels.

CHAPTER 10
Viola Communications, Abu Dhabi
Design: Life Space Interior Design + M&N Architecture
Quality: Highline 910
Collection: Cityscapes (recouloured) + Custom Design

THREE AMAZING
CARPET TILE OFFICES
We’ve scoped out three very different workplace fit-outs
to show you the flexibility, diversity and underrated
creative possibilities of the versatile carpet tiles.

For the refurbished offices of marketing and communications agency,

Viola Communications, in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emir-
ates, a creative and funky atmosphere has been created to encourage
all teams to work side-by-side while also maintaining their own individ-
ual environment. Different colours are used to mark each department,
with custom designed carpet tiles changing accordingly.

Several different themes are used to give distinctive character to each
space, while making sure that all areas follow the same design concept.
The main entrance is inspired by a metro station, with customised
carpet illustrating a colourful metro map.
lt’s in the informal meeting area, however, that we find our favour-
ite detail. Here, boldly coloured and patterned carpet tiles have been
oddly cut and integrated with the hardwood floor to amazing effect.
The geometric patterns and odd shapes extend onto the walls, mak-
ing the area both dynamic and intriguing. Beside the aesthetic effect
the carpet tiles, as well as the 3D effect of the protruding wall panels,
serve to minimize noise in a ‘hard’ room, which might otherwise have
been an acoustic nightmare.
“The flexibility provided by ege’s manufacturing process made it
possible to create non-repetitive designs which were fixed on the floor
as well as on walls and ceilings, creating a very individual office look as
well as enhanced acoustic performances” says Lorenzo Zoli, Manag-
ing Director at M + N Architecture, responsible for the overall design.

Quality: Figura Hexagon, Highline Loop Ecotrust
Collection: Custom Design

French-based AXA is a worldwide leader in financial services and a

company with a strong commitment to sustainability. For the design
of the offices of subsidiary AXA Technology Services, this sustainabil-
ity commitment is illustrated by a ‘flowing green river’ running along
all corridors and office spaces created using green Figura Hexagon
carpet tiles from the ege Highline Loop Barcode Ecotrust collection.
These tiles helped to break out of the typical boxy square look and
instead create a sense of innovation and flow.
With a Cradle to Cradle Bronze Certificate™ and a guaranteed con-
tent of 100% recycled fibre, this carpet not only worked to achieve the
design vision. It also helped to implement sustainable design in the
office environment.

Elan Edelman, Paris
Quality: Figura Hexagon Highline Loop Ecotrust
Collection: Cityscapes Modular Shuttle

For the headquarters of French-based international communications

agency Elan Edelman, Figura Hexagon carpet tiles were once again
used to fabulous, but more subtle effect. This time from the City-
scapes collection, softly toned hexagonal tiles are placed seemingly
at random to create a quiet tonal palette and sophisticated ambiance.
The entire interior is a great case for the art of simplicity and beauty
in the little details. The gradient design and subtle colours of the car-
pet compliment the subtlety, while giving space for other design ele-
ments like the patterned wallpaper and odd-coloured chairs to catch
the eye.
The Cityscapes carpet collection seems a great choice for the proj-
ect, as it features an optimum combination of functionality and design
– without compromising on quality and environmental requirements.
The collection is part of ege’s carpet tile concept, Modular Shuttle.

Key takeaways from these amazing designs:

Carpet tiles are not only faster and easier to install in office environments
yy
than wall to wall carpet, saving both time and money, they also have myriad
creative possibilities.
yyCarpet tiles can be effectively applied to seating, walls and ceilings, not just
floors, for dramatic effects and superior acoustic benefits.
yy If sustainability is an issue, carpet tiles are available that meet high
environmental standards and they also create less waste than wall to wall
carpet.
yy Carpet tiles come in all kinds of colours, shapes and sizes. The days of boring
grey squares might not be over, but there are a lot of other options out there
for giving the interior design that little something extra. Even for projects
requiring subtlety and simplicity.
