Essay Type Test Items (total 50 points)

Examine the following conditions/situations whether ethical or unethical. Justify your answer
using the assumptions of any or combination of the following ethical thoughts
● Kantian Ethics
● Rawl’s Ethics
● Aquinas Ethics
Conditions/Situations (10 points per situation/condition)
1. A 27 year old husband was in a dilemma on who to choose to save. His wife is a 22 year
old pregnant woman who is 36 weeks pregnant. During her labor, she experienced
massive bleeding with impending circulatory collapse. The doctor advised the husband
that the current medical practice can only save one life, the life of the mother or the life of
the unborn child.

If you were to help the husband decide, which one would be the best candidate to save?
Support your answer using the assumptions of any or combination of the above ethical
thoughts.

From the assumption of Aquinas which he believes that we should always follow our
conscience, even when it is wrong or causes great harm. If I were given a chance, I
would choose to save the life of a mother. Because as we think of what will happen next
life, both of them can still make another baby. Even though it takes a lot of time to
happen, atleast you still have your first love at the end. We know that it causes a lot of
conscience choosing the mother over her child, still we must think of the bettee option
rather than losing it.

2. A 14 year old girl got pregnant after a rape incident. The girl as a minor, under the
Philippine law, is not yet at a legal age to make a decision. The parents want to have the
fetus. However, the girl do not want to have abortion for fear of being subjected to
greater medical risk.

As a nurse caring for this client, whose decision would you support? Justify your answer
using the assumptions of any or combination of the above ethical thoughts.

Accordinf to Rawls theory that all of us are to be treated equally. If I’m the nurse caring to
that client, I will make a decision that could make feel better. In a way that I could help
the girl think what are the possible ways that will happen in the future also to their family
that still wants the baby. In this theory of Rawl, it stated that we must treat everyone
equal with advantages on its own.

3. A newly wed couple had been very excited to start a family. One year after their
wedding, they were happy to be pregnant. However, during a routine prenatal session,
the couple found out that the woman had a congenital heart defect that would possibly
endanger her life if she would continue the pregnancy.

Help the couple make the correct decision, using the assumptions of any or combination
of the above ethical thoughts.
If I’m giving a chance to make a decision, I will take a courage to ask the husband’s
decision. We must be fair of making decisiom not by just thinking about yourself but also
think about the others.

4. A medical doctor learned that her husband has lung cancer and that the cancer is
already in the late stage. The doctor - wide is still in denial and has tried all laboratory
procedures to rule out the existence of lung cancer. In the course of the cancer patient’s
confinement, he complained of severe chest pain that can only be relieved with the
administration of demerol (pethidine/meperidine). Read the background of the drug here.

As a nurse caring for the lung cancer patient, would you advise the continuation or the
discontinuation of the drug? Support your answer using the assumptions of any or
combination of the above ethical thoughts.

I would still advice the patient to continue what he was wanting to even though it hurts
seeing that person assuming that he could still be cured. I know its a bit selfish to not
give what they are wanting you, that’s why even though there’s no chances still we made
sure that we gave the best thing that can make him feel better.

5. Human cloning was done in a certain health care facility in order to produce organs for
transplantation. These human clones become organ donors for their patients that are
suffering from diseases.

In your opinion, is this practice ethical or unethical? Support your answer using the
assumptions of any or combination of the above ethical thoughts.

For me its ethical because we could honestly say that it is still useful in terms of helping
those people suffering to a certain disease or what. We must still follow our conscience
even though it can cause harm.
