Given that the mother is 17 and doesn’t have health insurance and she’s also too young to

be making logical and carefully thought out decisions for her newborn therefore counsel will be

provided to her. She has no medical insurance and has no means to pay her medical bills if her

newborn is kept on life support, and this will create hardship for the mother and her family. If

she decides to keep her baby on life support the hospital will need to have round the clock care

and this will require resources such as nurses, doctors, and other health professionals. Due to her

financial situation, she probably qualifies for Medicaid, she will then be provided with a

caseworker that will help her apply. The ethics that would be applied to this situation would be

“To lend support, by providing guidance to patients, families, and decision makers; To help in

clarifying issues; and to discuss alternatives and compromises” (Pozgar, 2013, p. #) by

“withdrawing nutrition and fluids from newborn” may cause debate within the ethic committee

and mother of the newborn. The ethics committee will say the newborn’s death is inevitable

despite withholding life support, and life treatment. If the ethics committee agrees to withdraw

life support and the mother wants to keep going with treatment this can be resolved by assisting

the mother ad educating her on the prognosis. The mother will also need counseling due to her

newborn being on life support and stress, 30% of women experience postpartum depression after

birth. Another ethical principle that will support this is autonomy is self-determination, meaning

that healthcare proivdersproviders are to support and respect the mother’s decision regardless of

the medical advice that was provided to her. Autonomy allows the patinepatient t to make their

own decisions. Any medical decisions made should be always ethical and show all ethical

principles. In this situation, it is hard for me to make a decision to fit all ethical protocols.

Beneficence is shown in this situation because it helps the mothers make their own best decision,

and the best decision is to withdraw nutrition and fluids form the newborn due to the baby’s

condition, and this decision will also decrease financial hardship that may come with keeping the

newborn on life support, and on life treatment.
