10. Swimming pool. A taxpayer with emphysema put in a pool after his doctor told him to
develop an exercise regime. He swam in it twice a day and improved his breathing capacity.
Turns out he swam in the pool more than his family did. The Tax Court allowed him to deduct
the cost of the pool (to the extent the cost exceeded its added value to the property) as a
medical expense because its primary purpose was for medical care. Also, the cost of heating the
pool, pool chemicals and a proportionate part of insuring the pool area are treated as medical
expenses.

7. Personal bad debts

If you lent money and didn’t get it back, you may qualify for a tax deduction. There are
restrictions: You must be able to prove that the money was a loan and not a gift, and you must
claim the bad debt on your tax return to offset any investment capital gains.

1. Automobile expenses incurred driving to and from medical procedures. You can deduct
19 cents per mile driven to doctor’s offices, hospitals, out-patient care facilities, etc., if the
mileage is “primarily for, and essential to, medical care” (according to the IRS). You can deduct
mileage whether you drive yourself or your dependents. Remember to keep scrupulous mileage

2. Make money on charitable contributions
Internal Revenue Code Section 280(A)(g) -- for those who want to look it up -- says you can rent out
your house for up to 14 days in a calendar year and all the income comes to you tax
- free. Go beyond the 14 days, and everything becomes taxable.
Now this is what you do:
1. Rent out your house to a qualified charity or church for a meeting once a month. Call a local hotel and
get their rates for a conference room to establish a fair rental amount. Say that's $5,000 for the monthly
use over the year. Since we have only 12 months, this monthly use will add up to less than 14 days out
of the year, so all the rental income is tax-free.
2. In appreciation for all the good works the charity or church does, and notin exchange for the rental,
you make a deductible contribution of $6,000. You're in the 25% bracket, so that saves
you $1,500 in federal taxes. What's the result? The charity spent $5,000 and got $6,000. It's up $1,000.
You contributed $6,000 and
got $5,000 in tax-free cash, plus another $1,500 in tax saving
s. You're up $500. Isn't tax magic wonderful?

$250,000 Exclusion on the Sale of a Main Home

Individuals can exclude up to $250,000 in profit from the sale of a main home (or $500,000 for a
married couple) as long as you have owned the home and lived in the home for a minimum of
two years. Those two years do not need to be consecutive. In the 5 years prior to the sale of the
house, you need to have lived in the house for at least 24 months in that 5-year period. In other
words, the home must have been your principal residence.

About Sodium Hydroxide used as a Drain Cleaner

Sodium Hydroxide was once sold as Red Devil Lye in stores, but is no longer being marketed by
that company. Red Hot Devil Lye distributed by Duda Diesel is now the red Devil Lye
replacement.

Sodium hydroxide lye reacts with fats and greases when combined with water to make soap. It is
a strong base and effective when attacking clogged drains. Sodium Hydroxide is naturally
occurring and is sewer and septic safe as it is diluted in its journey down your pipes. Though not
as effective as sulfuric acid, it is safer and easier to use. If you get dry sodium hydroxide on your
skin, it will not burn unless a small amount of moisture is present. Just wash it off immediately
and burns will be minimal.

Potassium hydroxide may also be used in drain opening. It is a bit more expensive but dissolves
into water faster and usually clears the drain quicker. It is best when drains are very clogged.
