Assignment 4 in Fluid Mechanics

Hydrostatic forces
General Instructions:
a. Provide a neat, organized, and detailed solution for each item. Your solution must
contain the following: a.) given quantities b.) Unknowns (required to find) c.) Working
equations/formula d.) Detailed calculations and e.) Box your final answer.
b. Write your solution on a short bond paper. Write your name, course, year, and
section on the topmost part of each page. Scan your papers (if you have a printer-
scanner at home) OR use CamScanner mobile app. and save the scanned files as
PDFs. If your solution paper has multiple pages, consolidate into one pdf document.
c. Label your work using this format – LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME – ASSIGNMENT
# (Example: De Guzman, Froilan – Assignment 1)
d. Turn in your work in Assignment Tab in MS Team Channel. Submit on time to
avoid any deductions. Good luck!
e. Each item, if answered correctly is worth 20 points.

1. Consider a heavy car submerged in water in a lake with a flat bottom. The driver’s
side door of the car is 1.1 m high and 0.9 m wide, and the top edge of the door is 10
m below the water surface. Determine the net force acting on the door (normal to its
surface) and the location of the pressure center if (a) the car is well-sealed, and it
contains air at atmospheric pressure and (b) the car is filled with water.

2. A long, solid cylinder of radius 2 ft hinged at point A

is used as an automatic gate, as shown in the figure
on the right. When the water level reaches 15 ft, the
cylindrical gate opens by turning about the hinge at
point A. Determine (a) the hydrostatic force acting
on the cylinder and its line of action when the gate
opens and (b) the weight of the cylinder per ft length
of the cylinder.
