The lessons in science show a spiral progression which means that learners will learn

with increased and depth knowledge by grade level. With this approach, learners still need to
develop and show their inquiry skills, scientific attitudes, and content and connections in lessons
to support the holistic development of a scientifically literate learner.

I choose light and sound, heat and electricity lessons under force and motion topic. In
grade 3, it discusses the sources and uses of light, sound, heat and electricity. In grade 4, it
discusses how light, heat and sound travel using various objects. In grade 5, it discusses the
effects of heat and electricity, light and sound on people and objects. And for grade 6, it
discusses how sound, light, and heat and electricity can be transformed. I observed that the
lessons stars from introducing light, sound, heat and electricity to how can be it transformed. We
can see the progression of the lessons from basic to difficult learning as they stick with the topic
but with the increase of knowledge in every grade level.

As a teacher, the challenge is how am I going to incorporate and assess inquiry skills,
scientific attitudes, and content and connections in these lessons to my students? The Lesson
starts by introducing the definition, uses, and sources which is a strong foundation to begin and
open their minds with deeper knowledge as they move forward in another grade level. In science,
it is necessary to shake students’ curiosity. Make them formulate questions about what they want
to learn and let them answer those through a simple investigation using simple tools and
equipment that will help them gather data and evidence. In those ways, they can avoid jumping
to conclusions as they work hard and think critically with the facts and evidence while doing the
investigation. It is also important for students to work together and consider and respect others'
ideas to come up with better ideas on how they are going to find solutions in case something
inappropriate happens in the investigation. These steps are applicable in light and sound, heat
and electricity lessons from grade 3 to grade 6 as it presents inquiry skills, scientific attitudes and
content and connections.

To be scientifically and technologically literate is what every science teacher aims to

their learners and to achieve that, teachers must always consider the three components of the
framework in every lesson for students to become a critical and problem solver; innovative and
inventive thinker; and effective communicator which will help them in their future endeavors.
