Designing an Experiment to Determine the Strength in an

Electromagnet

I. Objectives
A. Content Standards Understand a simple DC circuit and the relationship
between electricity and magnetism in electromagnets
B. Performance Standards Propose devise using electromagnet that is useful for
home school community.
C. Learning Competencies Design an experiment to determine the factors that
affect the strength of the electromagnet S5FE-III-j-9

Review of the Previous Lesson

 The teacher will review the previous lesson
about simple electric circuit.
 Using Power Point Presentation, the teacher will
present the question.
1. What is an electromagnet?
2. What are the parts of an electromagnet?
3. What happens to the electromagnet if the
electricity doesn’t flow?

B. Establishing the purpose of Motivation Activity: Arrange the words!

the lesson:
1. of turns number the in coil the

Answer: The number of turns in the coil

2. core the size the of

Answer: The size of the core

3. batteries the of number

Answer: The number of batteries

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the learners are able to:
1. design an experiment to determine the strength
in an electromagnet

C. Modelling/Presenting Video-based Presentation

examples/Instances of the
lesson What you need:

(How to Make an Electromagnet / Super Strong)
What to do:
1. Watch the video.
2. Write down important details.

D. Discussing new concepts and Activity Title: Making an Electromagnet / Super

practicing new skills #1 Strong (Group Activity)

What you need:

 constructed electromagnet
 used in previous day’s lesson
 sandpaper
 3 m copper wire
 3 pcs. 1.5 v battery
 tape
 #5 common nails

What to do:
1. Connect the 3 batteries using a tape.
2. With the supervision of any adult at home, detach the
insulator of the wire. Use the sandpaper to fully remove
the insulation in both ends of the wire.
3. Coil the wire around the nail many times until enough
is left to connect to the battery.
4. Place the iron nail coil near pieces of scissors, pliers,
and hammer.
5. Observe what happens.

E. Discussing new concepts and The strength of an electromagnet depends on (1) the
practicing new skills #2 number of turns in the coil, (2) the size of the core
and (3) the number of batteries. The greater the
number of turns the coil has, the stronger the
electromagnet is. The bigger the size of the core/nail,
the stronger the electromagnet is. The more batteries,
the stronger the electromagnet is.

Activity Title: Compare and Contrast

Using a venn diagram, compare and contrast the two
electromagnets you have.

F. Finding practical application of Problem-solving

concepts and skills in daily
living/ Application Abdul, the operator of a machine has to increase the
strength of the electromagnet of his machine, what
should he do?

The pupils needs to raise their hand if they want to

answer.

G. Making generalizations and Question and Answer:

abstraction about the lesson 1. What have you learned today?
2. How can we make an electromagnet stronger?

H. Evaluating Learning/Post
Assessment Directions: Write T if the statement is true and F if false

1. Magnet is used in making an electromagnet.

2. An electromagnet behaves like magnet only when

the wire is wrapped around iron core.

3. Number of batteries may affect the strength of an

electromagnet.

4. Number of coils may not affect the strength of an

electromagnet

5. An electromagnet can increase its strength.

I. Enrichment Assignment:
Activities/Additional activities
for application or Design your own experiment to determine the factors
recommendation or that affect the strength of an electromagnet. Write this
assignment on a piece of short coupon bond.

5. Remarks
6. Reflection
A. No. of learners who
earned 80% in the
evaluation
B. No. of learners who
require additional activities
for recommendation who
scored below 80%
C. Did the remedial lessons
work? No. of learners who
have caught up with the
lesson
D. No. of learners who
continue to require
remediation
E. Which of my teaching
strategies worked well?
Why did these work?
F. What difficulties did I
encounter which my
principal or supervisor can
help me solve?
G. What innovation or
localized materials did I
use/discover which I wish
to share with other
teachers.
