CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF STUDY
The power of beauty influences many aspects of modern society and daily life—perceptions surrounding
beauty date to ancient philosophers and have evolved significantly throughout history. Still, there
appear to be universally accepted physical characteristics of beauty that span different cultures. Human
beings have an inherent ability to distinguish between attractive and non-attractive based on physical
features that include facial averageness, symmetry, skin homogeneity, and sexual dimorphism (sex-
typical characteristics). Although beauty standards have changed over time, youthful appearance has
remained a permanent influential component of facial attractiveness. Each person's perception of
beauty is influenced by environment and perceptual adaptation, an experience-based process.
Perception of beauty varies by race and ethnicity. We discuss typical features of Caucasian, Asian, Black,
and Latino beauty. We also review the effects of globalization on spreading foreign beauty culture and
discuss how social media change traditional beauty stereotypes within the different races and
ethnicities.

According to Alla Kholmogorova professor of psychology head of faculty of counseling and clinical past
researcher about standard of physical beauty and mental health in children and young people in the era
of the information revolution that beauty is the attractive things that can be seen through the aspects of
others. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, beauty is the qualities in a person that gives pleasure
to the senses or minds. The women's beauty deals with their character, looked from their minds,
attitude, manner, and how they appreciate each other. Every woman has her own characters of beauty
to be kept in, that characters can be built by the values and culture of society. This study examines
negative consequences of promotion of unhealthy beauty standards for the mental health of young
people. The article provides the review of literature on the effects of promotion of unhealthy beauty
standards in cyberspace on eating disorders and narcissistic attitudes, the role of fashion dolls in the
formation of unhealthy physical beauty standards, as well as the research into dissatisfaction with
appearance and physical perfectionism at a young age. Vygotsky’s cultural-historical theory of cognitive
development serves as a framework to describe the mechanisms by which young people form
perceptions of physical attractiveness and attitudes toward their body. The article presents results of
two studies conducted by authors. The first study demonstrates internalization of unhealthy beauty
standards among preschool-aged Russian girls using the original experimental method ‘Choose a doll’.
The other shows significantly higher levels of dissatisfaction with own body and physical perfectionism
in young men and women living in big cities compared to their peers from large provincial towns and
identifies high level of parental criticism and other communication dysfunction in families as a significant
predictor of physical perfectionism in children. The authors conclude that social factors play an
important role in the formation of unhealthy standards of physical attractiveness among children and
young people.

Senate Bill No. 2358, 16th Congress of the Republic Anti- Discrimination Act of 2014 “AN ACT
PROHIBITING DISCRIMINATION ON THE BASIS OF ETHNICITY, RACE, RELIGION OR BELIEF, SEX
OR GENDER OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION, LANGUAGE, DISABILITY, EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT
AND OTHER FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AND PROVIDING PENALTIES FOR THE PURPOSE”

This research study will take place at Bagabag National High School. Beauty standards in the 21st
century have been filled with negative stereotypes for both men and women. Being harmful for all,
these standards lead to one being filled with depression, negative self-image, and even anxiety due to
not being able to love themselves fully. After not fulfilling the stereotypes of what society believes
someone should be, these boys and girls live their lives in silent pain. Many view themselves as “too fat”
or “too ugly” to live through everyday life. Young men and women are led to believe that they do not fit
the unrealistic beauty standards presented to them. Being a part of the younger generations in the 21st
century has made living through these pressures even more difficult. Fear has even been implanted into
the minds of those who suffer from these harsh beauty standards.
