EGE 16 – Teaching Math in the Intermediate Grades

UNIT 1 – ACTIVITY

CIRCUMFERENCE
CAN DIAMETER (d) c/d
(c)

A 210 cm 66.85 cm 3.14

B 170 cm 54.11 cm 3.14

C 168 cm 53.48 cm 3.14

D 212 cm 67.48 cm 3.14

1. What did you observed?

- Despite of the different sizes of the cans, if you divide the circumference
by the diameter, it will always be 3.14.

2. Do you see any pattern?

- Yes

3. If you do, can you state the relationship between the circumference and
diameter of a circle?
- The pi or π is a constant equal to the circumference-to-diameter ratio of a
circle (π=c/d). Thus, if you take any circle and get the length of its
circumference and divide it to its diameter, you will always get the pi
π=3.14.
