CIRCLE

A circle closed plane geometric shape. In technical terms, a

circle is a locus of a point moving around a fixed point at a fixed
distance away from the point. Basically, a circle is a closed curve with
its outer line equidistant from the center. The fixed distance from the
point is the radius of the circle. In real life, you will get many
examples of the circle such as a wheel, pizzas, a circular ground, etc.
Now let us learn, what are the terms used in the case of a circle.

PARTS OF A CIRCLE

RADIUS OF CIRCLE (r)

A line segment connecting the centre of a circle to any point on the

circle itself. The radius of the circle is denoted by “R” or “r”.
DIAMETER (d) OF CIRCLE

A line segment having both the endpoints on the circle. It is twice the
length of radius i.e. d = 2r. From the diameter, the radius of the circle
formula is obtained as r= d/2.

CIRCLE FORMULAS

We know that a circle is a two-dimensional curve-shaped figure, and

the two different parameters used to measure the circle are:

• Area of circle
• Circumference of a circle

AREA AND CIRCUMFERENCE OF A CIRCLE

1. Circumference of a circle- defined as the distance around the

circle. The word ‘perimeter’ is also sometimes used, although this
usually refers to the distance around polygons, figures made up of
the straight-line segment.

A circle circumference formula is given by;

C = πd = 2 π r

Where, π = 3.1415
Example 1:

Find the circumference of the circle whose radius is 9cm.

Solution:

Circumference, C=2πr

C= 2 x 3.14 x 9

Therefore, there circumference of the circle is equal to 56.52cm

Example 2:

If the diameter of the ball is 60cm, find the circumference of the ball.

Solution 1:

Circumference, C=πd

C= 3.14 x 60

Therefore, there circumference of the circle is equal to 188.4cm

Solution 2:

Finding the radius

r= d/2

r= 60/2

r= 30

Circumference, C=2πr

C= 2 x 3.14 x 30

Therefore, there circumference of the circle is equal to 188.4cm

2. Area of a circle- the amount of space occupied by the circle.

The circle formula to find the area is given by;

Area of a circle = 𝝅𝒓𝟐

Example 1:

Find the area of circle whose radius is 7cm

Solution:

Area= 𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 2

A= 3.14 x 72

A= 3.14 x 7 x 7

A= 𝟏𝟓𝟑. 𝟖𝟔𝒄𝒎𝟐

Example 2:

If the diameter of the table is 56cm. Find the radius and area of the
table.

Solution:

Finding the radius

r= d/2

r= 56/2

r= 23cm

Area, A= 𝜋𝑟 2

A= 3.14 x 23 x 23

A= 𝟏 𝟔𝟔𝟏. 𝟎𝟔𝒄𝒎𝟐
Example 3:

If planet Earth has a diameter of 12.742 km. Find its radius, Area, and
circumference.

Finding the radius

r= d/2

r= 12.742/2

r= 6 371km

Area, A= 𝜋𝑟 2

A= 3.14 x 6 371 x 6 371

A= 𝟏𝟐𝟕 𝟒𝟓𝟏 𝟒𝟕𝟐. 𝟕𝟒𝒌𝒎𝟐

Finding the Circumference of the earth

C= 2πr

C= 2 x 3.14 x 6 371

C= 40 009.88km

**If the Circumference and Area of the circle are given, then find its

radius using the formula.

Example 1:

Given:

Circumference = 31.4 cm

From the circumference, the radius can be calculated:

2 π r = 31.4

(2) (3.14) r= 31.4

r= 31.4/ (2)(3.14)
r= 10/2

r= 5cm

Checking:

C= 2πr

C= 2 x 3.14 x 5

C= 31.4cm

Example 2:

Given:

Area = 254.34cm

From the area, the radius can be calculated:

𝜋𝑟 2 = 254.34

(3.14) 𝑟 2 = 254.34

𝑟 2 = 254.34/3.14

𝑟 2 = √81

r= 9cm

Checking:

A= 𝜋𝑟 2

A= 3.14 x 9 x 9

A= 254.34cm

c. Generalization
• The area of a circle is the number of square units inside the circle.
It can be computed by A= 𝜋𝑟 2 . Where the pi (𝜋) is 3.14 and (r) is
the radius which is half of the diameter that connects into the
center of a circle to any point on the circle itself. It can be
computed as r= d/2.
• The diameter of a circle is two times of the radius. It can be
computed by d= 2r
• The circumference of a circle is the distance around the circle. It
can be computed by C= 2𝜋r. Where the pi (𝜋) is 3.14.
d. Application
• The learners will be divided into two groups and answer the
questions that will be flash on the screen.
• The group who earned most of the points will be the winner.
