Title
To verify Current Division Rule and Voltage Division Rule
Objective:
In this experiment we will be able to achieve following advantages
1. Connect circuits in the simulator
2. Plot traces for circuit parameters like voltage, current and power
3. Verify by comparing with theoretically calculated values

Theoretical Background
Part a: Current Division Rule
The current divider rule (CDR) is useful in determining the current flow through one branch of
a parallel circuit. The general form of the CDR for any current Ix state that.
Req
I x= ∗I
R x total

The current through any of the branches is equal to the total current times the ratio of the
equivalent resistance to the resistance of that particular branch. Where, Req is the total
resistance of the parallel branches under examination. And "I" is the total current of the circuit
under consideration.

Laboratory Tasks
1. Connect the circuit as shown in figure 1 below.
2. With current probe measure the current in branch A, B and C. Record the currents
below.
IA= __8.33 mA_____
IB=__ 3,03 mA______
IC= __1.78 mA__
Plot all three current traces together and add here:

3. Now using Current Divider Rule, calculate the currents in branch A, B and C. Show all
the calculations below:
IA= __8.23 mA____________.
IB=___3.02 mA____.
IC=___1.784 mA____.

4. Compare the simulated and calculated values of currents shown in step 2 and 3. What
conclusions do you make?

PART B: DESIGNING THE CURRENT DIVIDER CIRCUIT

5. Consider the circuit as shown in fig. 2 below. Refer to the circuit, R1, R2, R3 and R4
are 1.2kilo ohm, 5.6kilo ohm, 3.3kilo ohm and 10kilo ohm resistors, (but not in that
order). Using the CDR in the form that solves for resistance(R) rather than the voltage
(V), solve the necessary resistor locations that will result in the currents as shown in Fig
2. Record below the resistor values you determined:

R1= ________________.
R2= ________________.
R3= ________________.
R4= ________________.
RT= ________________.
6. Now connect the circuit as shown above with the resistors found in step 5. With current
probe, measure the total current and also the current in branches A, B, C and D. Record
IA= ___________________.
IB= ___________________.
IC= ___________________.
ID= ___________________.
IT= ___________________.

7. Connect the circuit as shown in Figure 3. Adjust the value of DC power supply as in the
circuit.

8. Measure the voltage drops and currents through each resistor and record in table 1
below.

9. Using VDR calculate the voltage across each resistor and then find the current through
it. Note down those values in table 02

11. Adjust the supply voltage output in the simulator, so that the ammeter reads exactly 6
mA. Measure the source voltage and record.
VCD = ___________________.
12. Using the voltage/current probes, measure each resistor's voltage drop and current
through it. Record in table below
Table 03

13. Using the same value of source voltage measured in step 11, calculate the voltage and
current through each of the seven 1.2 kilo ohm resistors. Record the calculated values in
the table below
Table 04

14. Compare the measured voltages and currents from table 3 with the calculated voltages
and currents from table 4. Are they in close agreement?
