Reservoir augmentation

The filling of big reservoirs is one of the most important earthquake-causing operations mentioned above.
More than 20 important incidents have been identified in which local seismicity has increased as a result
of water impoundment behind high dams. Often, causality cannot be established since there is insufficient
data to compare earthquake occurrence before and after the reservoir was filled. Reservoir-induction
effects are particularly noticeable in reservoirs with depths greater than 100 meters (330 feet) and
volumes greater than 1 cubic km (0.24 cubic mile). The Hoover Dam in the United States, the Aswan High
Dam in Egypt, and the Kariba Dam on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia are three sites where
such linkages are quite likely to have occurred. The most widely held explanation
