Volcanoes Come in a Variety of Shapes and Sizes While volcanoes exist in a range of shapes and

sizes, they all share a few important traits. All volcanoes are linked to a reservoir of molten rock
known as a magma chamber under the Earth's surface. When pressure builds up inside the
chamber, the buoyant magma escapes through a surface vent or series of vents and a central
interior conduit or set of pipes. Several types of volcanoes are formed as a result of these eruptions,
which vary in size, composition, and explosiveness. Stratovolcanoes are among of the most easily
recognized and striking volcanoes, with steep, conic summits soaring thousands of meters above
the terrain. They are also known as composite volcanoes because they are composed of layers of
lava, volcanic ash, and fractured rock.
