Lab 4 – Overview
CHEM 1701 – Polarity, VSEPR and Covalent Nomenclature

INFORMATION:
● In this lab, students will perform 2 procedures that explore the following:
o Procedure 1: using molecular model kits to build 3D representations of molecul es and predict
molecular geometry, use electronegativity to determine bond polarity, assign IUPAC
nomenclature to covalent compounds, draw Lewis structures for atoms and molecules
o Procedure 2: complete the above tasks for an unknown chemical
● To support your time in the lab and completion of the lab, students may bring hardcopies only of notes
or other work you have completed. Digital resources are not allowed .
● See the PROCEDURE & STUDENT WORKSHEET for detailed information about the lab procedu re.

EVALUATION:
● The course learning outcome ’s (CLO) , essential employability skills (EES), and learning objectives
listed below are practiced and/or evaluated in this lab through via the performance tasks indicated.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO):

• CLO 6 – Prepare for and conduct laboratory experiments to investigate scientific
questions using appropriate techniques.
