INTRODUCTION

Varun beverages Zimbabwe is a franchise of Pepsi company ,an Indian company that produces soft
drinks and bottles. Varun Beverages has become one of the country’s bigger soft drinks firms in
Zimbabwe within a relatively short period.Bottlers of Pepsi, 7up and Mirinda brands, Varun has
established itself as one of the soft drinks companies to reckon with in the soft drinks market. This is an
impressive achievement given it is going toe-to-toe with long-established Delta, Zimbabwe’s most
prominent beverage firm with big brands such as Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite.

PRODUCTION LINES

The company have five production lines that are producing a total of 58 million bottles and cans per
month. These include Carbonated Soft drinks, husky production, water purification, aquaclear bottled
mineral water,

Water purification

Water is supplied by Harare City Council and is stored in two 4 million litre tanks
which are receiver tanks. After that water is then transported to smaller tanks for
treatment using chlorine and ferric chloride and then pumped to sand filtration
tanks. Water is then transported to tanks with activated carbon which helps to
remove certain chemicals , particularly organic chemicals from water. GAC is also
used to remove chemicals that give objectionable odors or tastes to water such as
hydrogen sulphide. It is further softened using calcium and magnesium and then
taken to reverse osmosis for further treatment and then stored.

Ozonation

Ozonated water is processed through UV radiation, which splits one oxygen molecule into two oxygen
atoms. The individual atoms then form ozone, and the dissolved ozone causes the oxidation process of
the water, which turns the ozone gas back into regular, oxygen molecules. This type of water disinfection
process requires no additional chemicals or additives, and modern ozone generators create the gas that
sterilizes ozone water. The ozone generator will infuse the water with ozone, killing bacteria in the
process. Because ozone systems are highly reactive, ozone ends up as molecular oxygen by the end of
the treatment process. The result is a sterilized, completely pure drinking water that is void of
contaminants. Ozone water is said to have numerous benefits, and is pure enough to drink as bottled
water. The process is quick, and is highly effective in killing pathogens and protozoans.

Beverage making

Carbonated water constitutes up to 94% of a soft drink. Carbon dioxideadds that special sparkle and
bites to the beverage and also acts as a mildpreservative. Carbon dioxide is a uniquely suitable gas for
beveragesbecause it is inert, non-toxic, and relatively inexpensive and easy to liquefy. The second main
ingredient is sugar, which makes up 7-12% of a soft drink.Used in either dry or liquid form, sugar adds
sweetness and body to the beverage, enhancing the "mouth-feel," an important component
forconsumer enjoyment of a beverage. Sugar also balances flavors and acids.Sugar-free beverages
stemmed from a sugar scarcity during World War II.The company turned to high-intensity sweeteners,
mainly saccharin, whichwas phased out in the 1970s when it was declared a potential carcinogen.Other
sugar substitutes were introduced more successfully, notablyaspartame, or Nutra-Sweet, which was
widely used throughout the 1980sand 1990s for diet beverages. Because some high-intensity
sweeteners donot provide the desired mouth-feel and aftertaste of sugar, they often arecombined with
sugar and other sweeteners and flavors to improve thebeverage. The overall flavor of a beverage
depends on an intricate balance ofsweetness, tartness, and acidity (pH). Acids add sharpness to
thebackground taste and enhance the thirst-quenching experience bystimulating saliva flow. The most
common acid in soft drinks is citric acid, which has a lemony flavor.

Quality Control Parameters

Varun beverages company is IOS 9000 certified and have other certificates from quality acessors. It's a
company to trust when it comes to qualityissues. A lot of food products are susceptible. It is why the
food industry must adhere to quality requirements and maintain quality standards. Food is one item we
repeatedly buy from the same brand, believing that it meets our expectations and is of excellent quality.
Even a tiny blemish on quality could damage a brand’s reputation in this industry. In this case, profits
might go down the drain for the company. Therefore, quality control measures are of the utmost
importance for food brands. Quality control (QC) identifies and corrects defects in finished products and
is a reactive process. To achieve constant customer satisfaction, the sources of quality problems must be
identified and eliminated. It is an aspect of quality management that involves inspecting products for
defects, and it is typically done by a team that has been designated for that purpose. QC is an activity
that aims to identify defects in the actual products to ensure quality. During this process, the quality
inspectors identify and address any defects in the final products. To improve quality, a company needs
to identify and eliminate sources of quality problems. It further ensures that customer quality
expectations are met. Quality management refers to inspections and is typically handled by a specific
team of experts responsible for testing products for defects. Varun beverages company makes sure that
each and every product it produces is free from errors. They carry out some cleaning processes like back
washing of sand filtration, the process is done to wash the sand in the tanks after every 24 hours. Most
of the company's processes that involve mixing of things done by machines to avoid errors. They also
analyse their products to taste the amount of sugar, carbon dioxide and other ingredients, this is done to
make sure that a certain standard is repeated to avoid variations of the same product.

chemical and processing industries etc. The com pany's i ndustrial effluent treatment plants (ETP),
sewage treatmen t plants (STP) plants for defective portable water sources are assets in the MF and
other industries. These plants are consisting of physio- chemical treatment plant, biological treatment
followed by tertiary treatment. These effluent treatment plants meet the norms of State Pollution
Control Boards and waste water can be recycled to re-use for gardening, cooling etc. It undertakes tailor
made batch, semi automatic and automatic plants depending on the nature, concentration of pollutants,
waste volume generated and space available in the industry. The company also undertake operation and
