May 31--ALBANY -- Albany Technical College's Engineering Prep Academy has begun a six-week summer robotics
and mathematics enrichment camp for students in eighth through 10th grades.
The camp is designed to expose students to the field of engineering technology through hands-on activities such as
the construction of robots, 3D printing and mathematics activities. The camp began Tuesday and will run until July
12.
The campers meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The campers so far
consist of 25 ninth graders, and there is a waiting list.
"These fun group activities encourage students to work on the development of their troubleshooting skills, while at
the same time improving their math and analytical thinking skills," ATCEPA Project Director Michelle Lilly-Williams
said. "We're trying to help these kids find out where they fit in."
Williams said the campers spent two days on "soft skills" mainly to get accustomed to critical thinking skills and
learning teamwork. Emphasis is currently being placed on soft skills throughout the region, especially in the middle
grades.
The website thebalancecareers.com notes that soft skills are the personal attributes, personality traits, inherent
social cues and communication abilities needed for success on the job. Soft skills characterize how a person
interacts in his or her relationships with others.
Unlike hard skills that are learned, soft skills are similar to emotions or insights that allow people to "read" others.
These are much harder to learn, at least in a traditional classroom, and they are also much harder to measure and
evaluate. Soft skills include attitude, communication, creative thinking, work ethic, teamwork, networking, decision
making, positivity, time management, motivation, flexibility, problem-solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution.
Williams added the students will gradually move into robotics further into the camp.
Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard dropped by ATC Thursday to offer words of encouragement to the students.
"Surround yourself with people who understand who you are and just enjoy what you do," Hubbard said. "Have a
plan for your life. Share your ideas because you are standing on the shoulders of those who came before you. When
opportunity knocks at the door, be ready to open it."
