On August 21, 2007, the Adler Institute on Social Exclusion, a nonprofit institute advocating equity and justice, in
collaboration with the Jane Addams Hull House Association, will convene the first in a series of speaker events on
social exclusion, an emerging conceptual tool used to characterize social disadvantage. "Social Exclusion:
Sociological &Social Neuroscience Perspectives" will take place at the Center on Halsted, Chicago's premier
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender destination.
The event is open to the public and will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21, 2007. There is a
registration fee of $50 which includes a continental breakfast and a catered lunch. To register, or to see a

The event will address sociological and social neuroscience perspectives on social exclusion, and will feature

Adler School President Raymond E. Crossman, Ph.D., will give an opening address and Lynn Todman, Ph.D.,
director, Adler Institute on Social Exclusion, will introduce the program. Other speakers include Clarence Woods,
president and CEO of the Jane Addams Hull House Association and chairman of the Chicago Commission on
Human Relations; and Sherrod Taylor, faculty fellow, Institute on Social Exclusion.
The purpose of Adler School's Social Exclusion Conference Series is to highlight linkages among varied discourses
on social exclusion, to lay a foundation for the development of a broad-based conversation about issues of
exclusion, and to encourage advocacy, action and policy responses to exclusion.
"Many disciplines and professions including sociology, economics, biology and the arts focus on the structural
causes of social disadvantage but there is little discourse among the fields," said Lynn Todman. "Our goal with this

conference series is to show the similarities between disciplines and to encourage a transdisciplinary conversation
on the topic."
Upcoming speakers for the year-long conference series include W. Keith Campbell, Ph.D., associate professor,
Social Psychology Program at the University of Georgia; John T. Cacioppo, Ph.D., Tiffany &Margaret Blake
Distinguished Service Professor and director, Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience at the University of
Chicago; and Francisco Valdes, Ph.D., professor of law at the University of Miami. Dates, times and locations for
these events are to be determined.
