From times dating back to the ancient Greek and Indian civilization, there existed a theory that all

the objects around us were made up of very tiny indivisible particles. These tiny particles were called
atoms by greeks (derived from the Greek word Atomos which means ‘indivisible’). The Indian saint
Maharishi Kannad described it as parmanu made of pancha tatva or five elements. This was during
500 BC. All of this was based on philosophical considerations rather than experimental work.
This was true until the 18th century. By the eighteenth-century scientists discovered sub-atomic
particles namely proton, electron and neutrons.
Now the scientists wanted to figure out the structure of an atom. Although there were many
attempts in figuring out so , 3 of these models were rather more popular than the others and often
remained undebated until decades of their publishment.

These were : -

1) JJ Thomson’s plum pudding/Christmas pudding atomic model

2) Ernest Rutherford’s nuclear atomic model
3) Neil Bohr’s p
