Mixture - Types

A mixture is a material made by physically combining 2 or more substances

that are chemically different. Mixtures are of 2 types – homogeneous and
heterogeneous. As a part of this TACtivity, we have prepared three different
types of mixtures. Let us conduct a few tests to observe the properties of
these mixtures and infer their type based on these observations.
Transparency Test
We will refer to the three mixtures using the solutes dissolved in water
i.e. (a) Salt (b) Milk and (c) Chalk powder. Pour each of the three mixtures
in transparent glass containers. As instructed in the TACtivity guide, stick
a black tape or paper on one wall of the container. Predict and observe
if the tape is visible as you look through the mixture from the opposite
side. Your options are: ‘C’ – Clearly visible, ‘P’ – Partially visible, and ‘N’ –
Not visible

Stability
Leave all the mixtures undisturbed for 20 minutes. Predict and observe if
there is any residue settled after 20 minutes. Your options are: ‘N’ – No
residue, ‘B’ – Residue at the bottom, and ‘T’ – Residue at the top

Filtration
Filter each of the mixtures as instructed in TACtivity. Predict and observe
if you the solute will appear as residue on the filter paper after filtration.
Your options are: ‘P’ – Residue present on filter paper and ‘N’ – No
residue on filter paper

Further Exploration - Laser Beam Test

Take a laser pointer and shine the light through each of the three
mixtures. Predict and observe if you can see the light beam. Your options
are: ‘V’ – Visible, ‘B’ – No beam visible through mixture but light spot
seen at the exit and ‘N’ – Neither light beam through mixture nor light
spot at the exit
