Explore Bleaching Powder

Calcium hypochlorite is an inorganic compound and a main ingredient of

the product bleaching powder. It is a water-soluble chemical with the
smell of chlorine. In this TACtivity, we will explore all the properties of this
bleaching agent and record observations.
De-colouring Effect
Consider 3 container and label as A, B, C.
A – contains coloured water and 3 tablespoons of filtered bleaching
powder solution.
B – contains coloured water and 8 tablespoons of filtered bleaching
powder solution.
C – contains coloured water and 3 tablespoons of detergent solution.
Predict the colour change in all the three containers. At different time
intervals, observe and record the state of the coloured solutions in
containers A, B and C.
Your options are:
P – Partially de-coloured
C – Completely de-coloured
N – No change

Cleansing Effect
Soak 3 small pieces of cotton cloth in A, B and C.
A – contains filtered bleaching powder solution.
B – contains salt water solution.
C – contains washing powder solution.

Observe and record the change in the stained cloth pieces that were
soaked in A, B and C solutions, kept undisturbed for an hour.
Your options are:
N – No stain
P – Stain partially disappeared
A – Stain almost disappeared
C – Stain turned into a different colour

Effect on the Coloured Cloth

Predict the change in the coloured cloth piece (preferably a dark colour)
after soaking it in bleaching powder solution, kept undisturbed for an
hour. Remove and spread the coloured cloth after an hour, observe and
record the change in the coloured cloth piece that was tied with cotton
threads at different locations.
Your options are:
F – Full cloth is bleached
T– Threaded part is bleached
N– No change
B – Non-threaded part is bleached
