6.1 Objectives – Momentum and Impulse

Sections 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3
 Define momentum (p = mv) and impulse (J = ∆p = Ft).
 Can relate impulse with change in momentum or force applied over time.
 Know the units for momentum and impulse (kg · m · s–1 or N · s) and that the momentum vector points in the
direction of motion while the impulse vector points in the direction of acceleration.
 Can explain why two motions may have the same impulse but different forces because of different impact
times.

6.2 Objectives – Conservation of Momentum

Sections 7.4 and 7.5
 Know from Newton's Third Law that Momentum is a conserved quantity in the absence of an external force.
 Know and can solve problems involving elastic collisions, inelastic collisions, and explosions.
