CASE STUDY
Smart Restaurant

A waiter takes an order at a table, and then enters it online via one of the six terminals
located in the restaurant dining room. The order is routed to a printer in the appropriate
preparation area: the cold item printer if it is a salad, the hot-item printer if it is a hot sandwich
or the bar printer if it is a drink. A customer’s meal check-listing (bill) the items ordered and
the respective prices are automatically generated. This ordering system eliminates the old
three-carbon-copy guest check system as well as any problems caused by a waiter’s
handwriting. When the kitchen runs out of a food item, the cooks send out an ‘out of stock’
message, which will be displayed on the dining room terminals when waiters try to order that
item. This gives the waiters faster feedback, enabling them to give better service to the
customers. Other system features aid management in the planning and control of their
restaurant business. The system provides up-to-the-minute information on the food items
ordered and breaks out percentages showing sales of each item versus total sales. This helps
management plan menus according to customers’ tastes. The system also compares the weekly
sales totals versus food costs, allowing planning for tighter cost controls. In addition, whenever
an order is voided, the reasons for the void are keyed in. This may help later in management
decisions, especially if the voids consistently related to food or service. Acceptance of the
system by the users is exceptionally high since the waiters and waitresses were involved in the
selection and design process. All potential users were asked to give their impressions and ideas
about the various systems available before one was chosen.

ANSWER ALL OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS

QUESTION 03 – 15 MARKS
Explain the three primary types of MIS systems for decision making and identify one form of
each for a smart restaurant.
‫ السؤال االول‬9‫ الشابتر‬:‫االجابة‬
QUESTION 04– 10 MARKS

Describe the difference between transactional and analytical information, and determine
which types are used to create a smart restaurant's intelligent dashboard.

Transactional information encompasses all of the information contained

within a single business process or unit of work and its primary purpose is to
support the performing of daily operational tasks. Example: daily sales, salary
per hour, shipping an order.

Analytical information encompasses all organizational information and its

primary purpose is to support the performing of managerial analysis tasks.
Example: analytic the external environment.
QUESTION 05– 10 MARKS

Identify how a smart restaurant, drills-down, and slices-and-dices data to help customers
make better decisions.

The majority of the data the smart restaurant is using will include food, table
location, kind of food, and bill information . All of this information is used to
find optimal food , information on how to eat, and what to eat.
QUESTION 06 - 15 MARKS

Identify the five different types of artificial intelligence systems and create an example of
each for a smart restaurant?

Artificial intelligence (AI) simulates human thinking and behavior, such as the
ability to reason and learn. The five most common categories of AI are:

(1) Expert systems—computerized advisory programs that imitate the
reasoning processes of experts in solving difficult problems. For Example: order at
a table, and then enters it online via one of the six terminals located in the restaurant dining
room

(2) Neural networks—attempt to emulate the way the human brain works. For
example: The order is routed to a printer in the appropriate preparation area

(3) Genetic algorithm—a system that mimics the evolutionary, survival-of-the-

fittest process to generate increasingly better solutions to a problem. For
example: : the cold item printer if it is a salad, the hot-item printer if it is a hot sandwich or
the bar printer if it is a drink

(4) Intelligent agents—special-purpose knowledge-based information systems

that accomplishes specific tasks on behalf of their users. For example: customer’s
meal check-listing (bill) the items ordered and the respective prices are automatically
generated

(5) Virtual reality—a computer-simulated environment that can be a simulation

of the real world or an imaginary world. For example: This ordering system eliminates
the old three-carbon-copy guest check system as well as any problems caused by a waiter’s
handwriting

OVERALL MARKING SCHEME

85 - 100 Excellent Rigorous, coherent argument and insightful and well-structured answer that
makes appropriate and convincing use of a range of ideas. Thoughtful
integration of course material. A conclusion which follows from the
argument. Critical engagement with the question, deploying analysis using
key concepts, models or theories from the course. Successful synthesis of a
range of source material.
70 - 84 Very Employment and clear understanding of relevant subject matter, including
Good concepts, models and theories from the course. Thoughtful and a fair use of
a range of ideas. Appropriate use of empirical material, which balances
supporting theoretical discussion.
55 -69 Good Attempts an explanatory, analytical approach, but some flaws in
understanding. Reasonably coherent argument overall. Some use of
appropriate illustrative material. Answers in this and higher bands will
address all parts of the question.
40 - 54 Pass Broadly understands and addresses the question. Approach too descriptive,
lacks theoretical or conceptual understanding. Some confusion, lack of
clarity over meaning of relevant concepts. Has identified relevant material
from course, but not sufficiently ‘bent’ it to the question.
0 - 39 Fail Failure to fully understand or address the question, offers no coherent
argument. Very descriptive account, with little or no or unsuccessful attempt
at theoretical or conceptual analysis. Poor understanding of relevant
concepts. Some use of subjective evidence Little evidence of having studied
and understood the course materials.
