What is REALISM?
Realism in art described artworks that abandoned the traditional idealization and stylization
typically associated with the Romanticism movement in favor of creating a genuine depiction
of everyday life through the honest subject matter and scenes that were chosen.

Though never a cohesive movement, Realism is regarded as the first modern art movement,
rejecting traditional forms of art, literature, and social organisation as obsolete in the
aftermath of the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. Beginning in the 1840s in
France, Realism revolutionised painting by broadening perceptions of what constituted art.
Realist painters, working in a chaotic era marked by revolution and widespread social
change, replaced traditional art's idealistic images and literary conceits with real-life events,
giving the margins of society the same weight as grand history paintings and allegories.
