TAFSEER SURAH AL-MA'IDAH

Aayaat (83 – 120)

Ayah 83
Question: In Ayah 83 what do you mean by Shahideen َ‫دين‬ َّ ?
ِ ِ ‫ٱلشـٰه‬
The root word of َّ ‫ ٱ‬isَ ‫ ش ه د‬, witness َ
َ‫لشـٰه ِ ِدين‬
Those who bear witness of the Deen of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, the Sahaba
RadiAllahu ‘Anhum and the Muslim Ummah.

Ayah 84
Question: Who are the َ‫ ٱلصَّ ـٰل ِ ِحين‬in Ayah 84?
The Companions of the Prophet SallAllahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam and the Righteous
people after them.
Ayah 85
Question: What do you mean by ‘Ihsaan in Worship‘ ?
You worship Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala as if you see Him. If this is not possible
you should worship Him knowing that He sees you.

Ayah 86
Question: Who are the Companions of Hellfire?
Those who disbelieved In Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and belied His Signs are the
Companions of Hellfire.

Ayah 87
Question: In Ayah 87 what are the rulings being given to the Believers?
 Do not make the unlawful the things that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala has made
lawful.
 Do not commit excess / cross the limits.
Ayah 89
Question 1: In Ayah 89 what do you mean by َّ ِ ‫?ب‬
ِ ‫َٱلل ْغ َو‬
1. Unintentional oaths that are taken without thinking.
2. Oaths that are taken habitually.
Question 2: Which oaths will be one be held accountable for?
 One will be held accountable for those oaths that are made deliberately.
Question 3: What is the expiation for breaking an oath?
 To feed 10 needy people (Miskeen) with that food that you would normally
feed your dependents. OR
 To clothe 10 needy people with those clothes that you would normally clothe
your dependents. OR
 To free a slave. OR
 Whoever does not find these means then he must fast for three days.

Ayah 90
Question: Explain the following terms.
1. َ‫ٱ ْلخ ْمر‬ َ ِ ‫ ٱ ْلم ْي‬3. َ‫ ٱ ْلأنصٱب‬4. َ‫ ٱ ْلأ ْزلـٰم‬5. َ‫رِ ْجس‬

1. The root word of َ‫ ٱ ْلخ ْمر‬isَ ‫ خ م ر‬, intoxicant


 Everything that is intoxicating. Eg: Alcohol
 Every intoxicant that overpowers the intellect.
2. The root word of َ‫ ٱ ْلم ْي ِس‬isَ ‫ ى س ر‬, ease َ
Wealth that is acquired easily. Here it refers to gambling.

3. The root word of َ‫ٱ ْلأنصٱب‬ is ‫ نَصَب‬, statue


A stone alter that is erected, worshipped and slaughtered/sacrificed thereof.

4. The root word of َ‫ٱ ْلأ ْزلـٰم‬ is ‫ زَلَم‬, arrow


 The divining arrows
 Those arrows used for drawing lots/gambling.
5. The root word of َ‫رِ ْجس‬ is ‫ رَجَس‬, filth
All repugnant acts both internal and external.
Ayah 91
Question 1: What is the damage caused by intoxicants and gambling mentioned in
Ayah 91?
1. It causes enmity and hatred among people.
2. People engross themselves which hinders them from remembrance of Allah
Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and from prayer.
3. They abandon their obligations.

Ayah 92
Question: In Ayah 92 what are the things that are commanded to be done and
things to abstain from?
Obey Allah Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and His Messenger SallAllahu ‘Alayhi wa
Sallam and beware of the disobedience of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala.

Ayah 93
Question: ………. َ‫ ل ْيس‬Upon whom is there no blame/sin?
There is no blame on those who believed and did righteous deeds for what they
had consumed before “the prohibition”, as long as they fear Allah Subhanahu wa
Ta'ala, have faith, and do what is good and then they believe and act virtuously
and adopt Taqwa and do righteous deeds.

Ayah 94
Question: According to Ayah 94 explain why Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala tests the
believers?
Hunting was the mainstay (chief support) of the life of the Arabs. So they were
tested by prohibition on hunting during the Pilgrimage. Allah SWT wanted to test
who would follow Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and His Messenger SallAllahu ‘Alayhi
wa Sallam.
Ayah 95
Question 1: What is the meaning of َ‫ ُحم‬in Ayah 95?
It means a state of Ihraam for Hajj and Umrah.
Question 2: In Ayah 95 what is the expiation for hunting an animal intentionally in
the state of Ihram?
1. Whosoever hunts in the state of Ihraam the penalty is the offering brought to
the Ka’aba of an edible animal as adjudged by two just men among them. OR
2. The expiation is to feed the Masaakeen (needy persons). OR
3. Its equivalent in Sawm/fasting so that he may taste the consequence or the
punishment for his deed.

Ayah 96
Question: In Ayah 96 which type of hunting is permitted in the state of Ihram?

َِ ْ ‫ ص ْيدَٱ ْلب‬and َ‫طعٱمه‬.


The two things that are lawful are ‫ح‬

ِ ْ ‫ ص ْيدَٱ ْلب‬are live animals like fish which are hunted at sea.
َ‫ح‬
َ‫ طعٱمه‬means a dead animal of the sea like fish which lives in salt or fresh water.
They die there and are thrown ashore. (There is a Hadith “All dead animals of the
sea are lawful to eat.”)
Ayah 97
Question: Which are the things mentioned as Sha’aairullah/Signs of Allah
Subhanahu wa Ta'ala in Ayah 97?
1. Baitullah, the Sacred House of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala the Ka’aba.
2. The Sacred Months of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala.
3. The animals of the offerings and the garlanded.
Ayah 100
Question: What lesson did you learn from Ayah 100?
Al-Khabees that which is evil, al-Tayyab that which is good cannot be equal. You
will not take al-Khabees even though the abundance of al-Khabees may please
you.

Ayah 101
Question: What kind of questions are prohibited to be asked in Ayah 101?
Irrelevant questions are forbidden to be asked. If you ask irrelevant questions and
the answers are against yourself or your desire it will be harmful to you. Nabi
SallAllahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam has said before his Companions all the people before
the Companions were destroyed because of their asking too many questions. We
should question only when there is a necessity. Nabi SallAllahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam
has forbidden his Companions to ask too many questions.
Ayah 103
Question: According to Ayah 103 how did the Disbelievers invent lies about Allah
Subhanahu wa Ta’ala?
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala has not instituted things like a Bahira, a Saiba or a
Waseela or a Haam. All these animals were liberated in honour of idols as
practiced by the Pagans.

Ayah 106
Question: How should he make a will if death approaches while on a journey?
When death approaches any of you and you make a bequest i.e. wasiyat, a
testimony of two Muslims is sufficient or two others from non-Muslims is
sufficient. If in case the people or his relatives have a doubt they can detain them
after the Salah and they will have to swear that they did not do anything wrong.
Ayah 107-108

َْ ِ‫? وص‬
Question: What do you mean by ‫ى‬

َ‫ و ِص ْى‬is a person who is present when a man dies. The one who leaves an amanah
with a wasi writes it down or he listens to what the dying person is saying.
Ayah 109
Question 1: Which day has been mentioned in Ayah 109?
The Day of Resurrection.

Question 2: Why will the Messengers say َ‫ لٱَعِلْمَلنٱ‬on the Day of Resurrection?

1. On the Day of Resurrection everybody will be in a state of panic out of respect


of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala and due to the terror of that Day.
2. Due to lack of knowledge compared to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala.
3. The Messengers do not know the condition of people's hearts.
4. The Messengers do not have the knowledge of the unseen.
5. The Messengers have no knowledge of what people said and did after they
passed away.

Ayah 110
Question 1: Which blessings given to Isa Alayhis-Salaam are mentioned in Ayah
110?
1. He was born by the ‘Kalimah-e-Kun’ of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala .
2. He was strengthened with Rooh-ul-Quddoos.
3. He spoke from the crib/cradle.
4. He will speak to people even in maturity.
5. He was taught ‘The Book’ and ‘Wisdom’.
6. Knowledge of the Torah and the Gospel was imparted to him.
7. By the permission of Allah, he fashioned birds of clay and when he blew into
them, they became alive.
8. By the permission of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, he healed the one born blind
and the leper.
9. By the permission of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, he raised the dead (brought
them back to life).
10. When the Bani Israel took Isa Alayhis-Salaam to be crucified, Allah Subhanahu

wa Ta'ala saved him.
Ayah 111

Question 1: What do you mean by ‫ِى‬


َ ْ ‫? حوٱر‬
The root word of ‫ِى‬
َ ْ ‫ حوٱر‬is ‫حَوَر‬, meaning white.
Sincere friends of every Prophet whose hidden and obvious self is the same,
whose hearts are clean. Here it means the Companions of Isa Alayhis-Salaam.

Question 2: Which Companion was called the Hawari-e-Rasool?


Hazrat Zubair RadiAllahu ‘Anhu.

Question 3: What were the reasons for the Hawariyoon to ask Isa Alayhis-Salaam
for a table-spread to be brought down from Heaven?
The Hawariyoon of Isa Alayhis-Salaam asked for the table-spread to be brought
down from Heaven so that:
1. They would eat from it and their hearts would be content.
2. They would be certain that Isa Alayhis-Salaam was truthful and then they
would be of those who testified.

Ayah 115
Question: What was the condition laid down by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala to send
down the table-spread?
The condition laid down by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala before laying down the
table-spread was that if anyone would disbelieve after that, He would surely
punish him in a manner that no one in the world had ever been punished.
Ayah 117
Question: What was the central point of the Dawah of Isa Alayhis-Salaam?
 Tawheed : Worship Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, the One and Only who is my
Rabb and your Rabb.

Ayah 119
Question 1: What benefit will the truthful people get on the Day of Qiyamah?
The truth of the truthful people will benefit them on the Day of Qiyamah.
Question 2: What is the reward that will be given to the truthful people in Ayah 119?
For them are Gardens underneath which rivers flow and they shall abide in it
forever and ever. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will be well-pleased with them and
they will be well-pleased with Him.
Question 3: What is the sign of the pleasure of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala is this
duniya?
1. The opportunity, the environment and the ability to do good deeds.
2. Acquiring of sound/right knowledge.
3. “The means” (Tawfeeq) that make it easy to act and live by His Guidance.
