The other questions are for self study.

1. By completing squares prove that for any real numbers x, y and z we have
(a) x 4 − 3x 2 − 6x + 13 > 0
(b)* x 8 − 5x 4 − 5x 2 − 2x + 19 > 0
(c) x 8 − 5x 4 − x 2 − 2x + 11 > 0.
(d) 2x 2 + 2y2 − 2xy − 2x − 4y + 5 > 0
(e)* x 2 + 5y2 + 5z 2 − 4xy − 4yz − 6z + 10 > 0
(f) 2x 2 + 2y2 + 10z 2 − 2xy − 6yz − 4x − 2z + 5 > 0

2* Find all the values of x, y and z such that

x 2 + 13y2 + 2z 2 − 6xy − 4yz − 6z + 9 = 0.

3* Let x, y, z be three real numbers such that

x 2 + 8y2 + 2z 2 − 4xy − 4yz − 6z = 16.

By completion of squares method prove that

−12 ≤ x ≤ 18, −3.5 ≤ y ≤ 6.5, −2 ≤ z ≤ 8.
