1. Sonia scored x marks in Maths, y marks in Science and 50 marks in English. What
is her total score in these three subjects ?
Ans. Marks in Maths = x, Marks in Sciences = y. Marks in English = 50. Total marks = x
+ y + 50
2. A student scored x marks in English but the teacher deducted 5 marks for bad hand-
writing. What was the students’s final score in English ?
Ans. Marks in English = x. Deducted marks = 5. Final score = x – 5
3. Write the following using numbers literal number and signs of basic operations.
Clearly state what each letter represents.
(a) The perimeter of a rectangle is equal to twice the sum of its length and breadth.
Ans. P = 2(L + B) (where P = perimeter, L = length, B = breadth.)
(b) The selling price is equal to cost price plus profit.
Ans. S.P. = C.P. + P. Where S.P. is selling price, C.P. cost price and P is profit.
(c) Area of a square is equal to the square of its side.
Ans. A = (L)2 (where A = Area, L = Length of side.)
4. Find the value of :
(i) a + 2b – 3c, when a = 5, b = 4 and c = 2
