ENGAGEMENT
Simple word problem, each of them have a different method of showing me the

Johnny–how many mini cupcakes did Ben eat in total?

has. How many dollars does Olivia have in her wallet?
Have students show me their answers, and then explain how they got their answers.
EXPLORATION
Pg. 35. Have students try the first page (one problem) on their own. Explain the
process and that they should read carefully and be sure to write the answers using full
sentences.
“I need to find…”
“I will use the ______ strategy.”
Sample Common Core Math Lesson
Share: Have students show me their answers, and then elaborate on how they got
their answers.
EXPLANATION
Pg. 36. Teach this to the class using the whiteboard and using the draw a diagram
strategy.
What do I need to find? I need to find how far the balloon traveled on the second
trip.
How will I use the information? I will use a bar model to show the two trips.
Is your answer reasonable? Yes, because I used the bar model and checked my answer
using inverse operations.
ELABORATION
Pg. 37 #1. Guided.
Pg. 37 #2. (Explain that they are NOT to do #3-4 because that is a checkpoint.) Have
students do the problems in teams, and then share the answer. If they’re not having a
good day, do the problems on your own and then share with the class as I will direct.
For sharing time, students can answer with the accountable talk.
Pg. 38. As time permits, have students work on this page on their own.
EVALUATION
Exit slip. I will draw the faces they may pick from on the whiteboard to save time.
