Parenting Strategies for ASD

The document summarizes three studies on parenting strategies for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The first study found that mothers use different parenting strategies like reform parenting, which uses firm communication and rules, and warmth parenting. Reform parenting was found to impact children's autonomy, behavior, and social skills. The second study found that receiving an ASD diagnosis is emotionally challenging for parents and causes feelings of guilt, denial, and difficulty understanding their child's behavior. Parents process acceptance over time. The third study interviewed a parent who initially struggled to understand their son's avoidance of eye contact and lack of reaction. It defined ASD as involving repetitive behaviors and challenges in social skills and communication.

In the inquiry conducted by Lucero (n.dz) findings revealed that parents, specifically, mothers have
varying parenting strategies towards their children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In order to
approach their children’s behavior, reform parenting was utilized. This strategy is imposed by being firm
in correcting their children’s behavior. They discipline their children through strong communication and
impose firm rules to address their behavior. Further, the study also generated other types of parenting
strategies that are used by parents in dealing with their children’s behavior. These are Progressive and
Warmth Parenting. In addition, the effect of reform parenting was also revealed. Themes were identified
in the effect of the said parenting technique to the child with autism. These are Autonomy,
Conscientiousness, Improve Sociability, and Aggression. This existing study was proved to be effective in
providing the current study a substantial information as to how parents deal with their children
diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This study also helped in answering one of the
inquiries of the present study which was about how parents deal with their children. The present study
aims to provide informative materials to parents and teachers about children diagnosed with ASD. With
this data, the researchers were able to gain a better understanding and a closer look at how parents
with their children diagnosed with ASD employ parenting strategies.

The review conducted by Makino et. al. (2021) denoted that for parents, getting a diagnosis of ASD for
their child is an emotionally challenging process. The study revealed diverse emotions experienced after
the diagnosis such as difficulty understanding child’s behavior, sense of guilt and self-blame. Further,
the denial appeared to be a common instance on parental reaction to diagnosis which was motivated by
fear. The results showed the lived experiences of parents in gaining self-acceptance. This study will
greatly help the realization of the objectives of the present study. It provided valuable information that
will be able to answer the research question of the present study. Particularly, it described the process
of acceptance taken by the parents of children diagnosed with ASD. This data will be of great help in
providing insights on how parents accepted the diagnosis of their children.

has a difficulty understanding his behavior. People would often describe the child diagnosed with ASD as
wild. Further, the parent revealed that she did not know where to bring her child as she had a difficulty
understanding his behavior. The article further revealed that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),
refers to a range of conditions characterized by repetitive behavior, trouble in communication,
