Introduction
This chapter describes the background of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the

study, scope and delimitation, and definition of terms.

Background of the study

Due to the family’s financial incapability, the number of employed students had raised. Many

students and parents have found it beneficial as it helps in minimizing their daily expenses. However,

it is undeniable that students must have the ability to balance work and study (Holmes, 2008). Hence,

students’ experiences while working must be investigated with the inclusion of their ways in coping up

with their exams as well as school activities especially when there are ongoing significant events.

In many cases, the academic performance of employed students are affected. Time spent in

studying and working are proven to be have a great influence towards the academic performance

(Nonis & Hudson, 2010). In addition, relevant studies have shown that students who work while

studying often encounter unfavorable health issues due to the insufficient time spent for sleep.

Moreover, students ends up unsatisfied with their leisure time for they have to substitute it with other

more important activities particularly in school (Franke, 2003). On the contrary, they had to keep on

working to get paid and be comfortable when every payment in school approaches.

Meanwhile, one of the universities here in Davao City have discovered a high self-efficacy among

working students. Despite of the challenge in coping with their academic performance, they kept on

working to earn and support their own studies in order for them to sustain their payment obligations in

school (Dagcuta, 2014). As a result of their study, teaching strategies has been proposed in order to

reinforce the learning outcomes of the learners, particularly the working students.

To further discuss the current experiences of working students specifically here in University of

South-eastern Philippines, this research has been made. Although a research regarding the

efficiency of students in the class has been conducted, the specific experience of student in terms of

mental and physical health aside from academic performance has not been discussed yet. Thus, this
research must be pursued to reveal the challenges that working students encounter in their daily

living.
